Hello All,
I've received a few questions about our closure on the week commencing 10th
April. The centre will be accessible and you can use open plan computers
and will be able to operate the scanners. However, YNiC will not be fully
staffed and for this reason we will not be able to offer help with scanning
or stimulus generation and analysis during this week.

A few updates:
1) YNiC will be closed for the week commencing 10th April.
2) The Cognitive Neuroscience MSc course was featured in the Guardian's
postgraduate supplement - please see the link below. Thanks to Tim
Andrews, Jane Hazel and Joe Lyons for their work promoting the course and
the centre.

3) We continue to pilot the use of the Siemens scanner and it is working

Hi All,
This week, Andre' & Richard will be presenting a session they are
calling "Making Pretty Pictures: (more) advanced visualization methods
for imaging data". Please join us for the last presentation of term and
refreshments afterwards in the YNiC open plan area at 4pm on Thursday.
Other news:
* Impromptu Project presentation: Sam Berens and Aiden Horner will be
presenting a project proposal at 1pm on Tuesday the 14th of March
(today) in the YNiC meeting room. Late notice, but feel free to attend
if you can.
* Repair work on the MEG system continues.
* Two pilot projects are now actively acquiring data on the Siemens 3T
MRI system - this process is allowing us to fine tune data acquisition
protocols and the processing stream for data handling from this scanner.

Hello All,
Apologies, this should have been sent earlier this week.
This week's seminar will be: '*The Siemens Scanner – what can it do (for
you)?* by Alex Wade and Tony Morland. It will be at 4pm at YNiC -
refreshments will follow.
Also, this week (today, Wednesday) many of the YNiC staff and other
investigators, who are trained or are in training to operate the scanners,
will be attending a first aid course. YNiC will therefore have a skeleton
staff on Wednesday.
The MRI scanners are running well, but we are still having an uphill
struggle with MEG.

This year has seen increased activity in the center associated with MSc
and MPsych teaching and practicals. These sessions often coincide with
periods during which we are scanning clinical patients at the center. It
is important therefore that anyone arriving at, using or leaving the
center does so in a professional and courteous manner.
In order to minimize disruption in the patient waiting area (the "main
YNiC reception"), we ask that all students arriving at the center for
teaching / practical sessions to use the main BioCentre reception entrance.

Dear All,
A few issues and upcoming events at YNiC
1. MEG is still down. We are attempting to debug some of the electronics.
2. We are piloting work on the Siemens scanner. We will feedback on
progress at the end of term.
3. The GE scanner failed to reconstruct some images in a recent scan
sessions; note to operators to check the scanner has reconstructed images
as you go along. Report any failures, please.
4. Deniz et al will be using the centre for a 'Brain Hack' from Thursday
through Sunday.
5. Deniz will also give a presentation on the Brain Hack on Thursday
afternoon at the YNiC Seminar
6. We receive offers to help with research from keen undergraduates. We
are usually too busy to train them up to help us, but if you have any
research that would benefit from voluntary input from keen undergraduates,
please get in touch and we can pass on the details of people who can help.

Just a reminder that we are lucky enough to have an external speaker for
the YNiC seminar today. Please join us for Magdalena Sliwinska
(post-doctoral researcher at Imperial) 's talk at 4:15 in the YNiC open
plan area, and for refreshments afterwards. The abstract for her talk reads:
*Investigating the importance of domain-general neural networks for
vocabulary learning:* There is now good evidence indicating that
domain-general brain systems play a central role in various language
processes, and potentially in the recovery from post-stroke aphasia.
Part of the so-called salience network, consisting of adjacent areas in
the midline superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and dorsal anterior cingulate
cortex (dACC), forms a core component of these distributed systems. In
this talk, I will present results from a study that was designed to
collect proof-of-principle data on healthy individuals, prior to a study
on post-stroke aphasia, to assess whether novel vocabulary learning
activates the salience network and whether cortical stimulation applied
to this midline frontal brain region can influence vocabulary learning.

* MEG repair work continues
A note about booking etiquette:
One of the most efficient ways to use the scanners is to book a
number of participants back-to-back in consecutive slots on the scanner.
It is not acceptable practice to leave small, non-booked slots between
these participants. An example would be if you were scanning 3 subjects
for 45 minutes each, but leaving the scanner non-booked between them for
15 minutes so you can have a coffee break, or because that corresponds
better with your PEEBS slots. Gaps like this will be noted and PIs will
be charged for lost time. The scanners are very busy and we must do our
best to optimize access to the facilities in a fair and financially
viable way. If you 're having problems with bookings or have any
suggestions please fee free to contact us.
