In contrary, /Emotional Empathy/ is characterized as an emotional response resulting from and mirroring the emotional state of an opposing individual. Empathy deficits are core characteristics of some psychiatric disorders, but foremost it has been associated with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and conduct disease (CD) or antisocial personality disorder (APD). The empathy imbalance theory suggests that individuals with ASD and APD/CD constitute opposing empathy imbalance disorder, with ASD characterized by disrupted cognitive empathy and intact emotional empathy and CD/APD characterized by intact cognitive empathy, but disturbed emotional empathy. *However, the neuronal underpinnings that constitute these empathy deficits in ASD or APD are still subject to investigations, and rarely, projects have directly compared individuals of both disorders within the same study. *In this project, we will employ functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (f/MRI) techniques as well as eye tracking to study the neuronal basis of emotion perception and emotion regulation in children/adolescents and young adults with and without a diagnosis of ASD or CD/APD. ** *Education / Requirements* We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student, interested in pursuing a career in cognitive neuroscience with keen interest in translational research. Students with a master degree and background in biology, psychology, neuroscience or equal disciplines are encouraged to apply. Experience with basic statistical software packages is requirement, and prior experience in experimental psychology and/or computer or programming skills (e.g. linux systems, matlab, fMRI analysis packages) are considered an advantage. We provide a unique learning opportunity within a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and researchers. PhD students will further be part of a European wide FP7 project on female conduct disorder. * A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Will Alexander at Ghent University, Belgium. The position is part of a 5 year project investigating reinforcement learning and cognitive control, funded through the FWO-Flanders. The ideal candidate will have experience and interests in one or more of the following areas: 1) fMRI, 2) cognitive control, 3) computational neural modeling, and 4) reinforcement learning. Individuals with experience in applying computational models to the analysis of fMRI data are especially encouraged to apply. Depending on background and interests, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop computational neural models of cognitive control and decision making, as well as to contribute to the design, execution, and analysis of behavioral and fMRI experiments intended to inform and constrain new computational models. The duration of the position is initially two years, with the possibility of renewal for an additional two years The position is available from the beginning of February, 2014, although the start date is flexible. This is a full-time position with salary based on standard Belgian regulations. Dr. Theodore Beauchaine at the Department of Psychology, The Ohio State University invites applications for a post-doctoral researcher in the neuroscience of developmental psychopathology, to begin in spring or summer of 2014, or sooner if a suitable candidate applies. Primary responsibilities include planning, executing, analyzing, and co-authoring papers from fMRI studies with children, adolescents, and young adults who are affected by mood disorders and/or externalizing spectrum disorders. The Department of Psychology houses the Center for Cognitive and Behavioral Brain Imaging, which has a recently commissioned Siemens 3T Trio MRI Total Imaging Matrix (TIM) system with all the necessary equipment to perform structural and functional imaging studies. The postdoc will receive training in mentoring and supervising students, managing a research team, teaching seminars, grant-writing, and authoring scientific papers. The position affords considerable opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration with Psychiatry and other departments across campus, and for publication of papers from existing data. Applicants must have substantial experience with analyzing imaging data, a Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology, or a related field by the start date, and strong potential for a career in research. A postdoctoral position is available in the lab of Carlo Reverberi and Paolo Cherubini at the Dept. of Psychology of the Università Milano-Bicocca, Milan (Italy). The projects will focus on how and where our brain represents the information relevant for the effective execution of collaborative tasks. The post holder will be required to design, set up, run and analyze experiments, and to contribute to their dissemination through scholarly articles and participation to conferences. The Lab is interdisciplinary, mixing expertise in cognition, neuroscience, statistics and mathematics. Experiments will use both behavioral and neuroscience techniques (e.g. multivariate analysis on fMRI data). This project will be performed in collaboration with the John-Dylan Haynes lab at the Bernstein Centre of Computational Neuroscience, Charité - Universitätsmedizin, Berlin, thus the post holder is expected to spend part of the time (e.g. a year) at the BCCN-Berlin. FMRI data acquisition will take place at the Berlin Center for Advanced Neuroimaging: The BCAN is equipped with two Siemens 32-channel 3 Tesla MRI systems. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in neuroscience, cognitive science, physics or mathematics, expertise in the analysis of large data sets and/or fMRI analysis, and excellent programming skills. The successful candidate is expected to work within the general framework of the project, but also to actively contribute with his/her own ideas. The initial appointment is for two years. Mental Health and Complex Disorders Research Program, Queensland Berghofer Institute of Medical Research would like to invite applications for a 3-year Post Doc position starting as early as 1 November 2013. The current project seeks to develop advanced neuroimaging techniques in characterizing neurological and psychiatric diseases. The fellow is expected to employ state-of-art imaging techniques, including structural and functional MRI, EEG, DTI, combined with autonomic physiological recording. Analysis will have an emphasis on functional and effective connectivity, and cortical autonomic interaction. The ideal candidate will have an interest in clinical neuroscience, fMRI methods development, autonomic system, or a combination. The fellow is expected to be involved with each stages of the project, and have ample authorship opportunities. Candidates must have a PhD degree in neuroscience, engineering, computer science or equivalent academic qualifications. Training in neuroimaging and proficiency programming (in Matlab, C++, or R) is required; experience in multivariate approaches and combined fMRI-EEG in particular is a plus. Basic knowledge about the human brain is highly desired. Excellent communication skills in English are essential. The fellow will work directly with QIMR International Fellow, Dr. Christine Guo. Die Aufgaben umfassen die Entwicklung der Algorithmen zur multimodalen Datenintegration und die software-technische Umsetzung. Das Ergebnis soll ein patentfähiges Diagnoseinstrument sein. Post-doc position in small animal MRI A post-doctoral position in small animal MRI is available in the Department for Health Science and Technology at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland. The position is located in the Neural Control of Movement Laboratory and projects will focus on structural and functional connectivity measurements in rat and mouse models of neurological or psychiatric diseases. Connectivity will be determined based on DTI and fMRI measurements of the resting state or during sensory stimulation. All experiments will be performed in close collaboration with the Animal Imaging Centre lead by Prof. M. Rudin that is equipped with the latest, cutting-edge MRI technology. The Neural Control of Movement Laboratory provides an inspiring interdisciplinary research environment and has tight collaborations with leading scientists in molecular neuroscience and human MRI. All projects have a highly translational character with the goal to apply the same MRI methodology in animal models and human volunteers/patients. The successful candidate has a strong background in medical imaging in small animal models as well as in standard analysis methods. Experience with behavioural testing in rat/mice, knowledge of how to induced experimental brain lesions, or a good background in molecular techniques is a distinct advantage. We are looking for a young, independent researcher with a large interest in translational work and good interpersonal, and communication skills. The position is available for a period of 4 years.
