Fwd: 2 PhD positions in motivation and decision making

Applications are invited for two PhD positions in the Psychology department at the University of Giessen, Germany. The fist position is available immediately with a flexible starting date. This position is funded by the project grant “Modulation of value-based decision making by novelty”. The project will investigate the influence of contextual novelty on learning and decision-making using fMRI. The second position will be available starting September. This position is not associated with a specific project, giving room to the candidate's ideas in designing experiments on motivation and decision making. The department offers an on-site research-dedicated 3T MRI scanner. The successful candidate(s) will collect and analyze fMRI data using computational models of decision-making, present the results at scientific conferences and write scientific papers. We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, psychology, biology or a related field and with a strong interest in cognitive neuroscience and the ability to work independently. We expect programming skills and proficiency in English; prior experience in computational neuroscience and experience with fMRI are of advantage. The DFG-funded research project is on the neural basis of grapheme-color synesthesia, a perceptual phenomenon where achromatic letters or numbers produce a simultaneous sensation of color. Postdoc Opening: There is an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow with experience in machine learning, pattern recognition and computational modeling who is interested in functional imaging analysis relating to Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The focus of our research is to identify clinically relevant biomarkers as diagnostic and prognostic indicators of TBI by integrating multimodal neuroimaging and neurobehavioral measures. The proposed work will make use of previously collected neuroimaging and self-report symptom measures housed in a database at the National Intrepid Center of Excellence (NICoE), in Washington, D.C. This database contains structural and functional magnetic resonance (MR) images from over 500 TBI patients and fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) images for over 320 of these patients, with additional control subjects. MEG data are also available, along with advanced computational resources. Responsibilities: 1. The main focus of this position is on developing and implementing pattern recognition and machine learning tools for the analysis of MRI and fMRI data sets. 2. Identify and develop multimodal visualization tools and statistical models to classify and discriminate morphological features in imaging data sets. 3. Develop and implement optimization routines to increase efficiency of pattern detection and visualization tools. 4. Other duties include optimizing protocols, monitoring quality control, and participating in the grant and research report authorship. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Experience in machine learning techniques, image processing, computational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, pattern recognition, nonlinear dynamics, analyzing large neural data sets, neural systems modeling or related areas. Expertise in MRI, fMRI, and quantitative (morphological) MRI. Experience with statistical analysis using a common analysis package (AFNI, FSL or SPM) preferred. Proficiency in a scientific programming language required (e.g. IDL, Matlab, python, C++). Incumbent should also have strong technical writing and verbal communication skills, posses a collaborative personality, strong attention to detail and be highly motivated. U.S. citizenship and/or ability to pass a rigorous background check required. Dear all, The Department of Neurology at the Max Planck Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences in Leipzig and the IFB Adiposity Diseases at the Medical Center Leipzig offer 2 PhD positions in the newly founded Research Group “Obesity and Aging”, headed by Dr Veronica Witte. We aim to determine the effects of obesity, dietary habits and other lifestyle-related factors on the aging brain, and to shed light on potential underlying mechanisms including an individual’s genetic background. Therefore, we use functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), behavioural data, peripheral markers, and genotyping in large cohorts of younger and older humans. Under supervision, the successful applicant will work independently on MRI analyses, statistical analyses, literature research and manuscript drafting as well as on the development of new projects. Participation in the group’s journal club and attendance at meetings is expected. We are looking for a motivated, self-organized, and team-oriented PhD student, holding a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the disciplines neuroscience/biomedical sciences (psychology, biology, medicine, bioinformatics...). Previous experience in statistics, epidemiology, dealing with large datasets, neuroimaging methods, neuropsychological testing, neuroanatomy, imaging genetics or programming skills are an advantage.
