Dear Sir/Madam
I would be very grateful if you could circulate the following Fellowship
advertisement to the staff in your Psychology Department.
The University of Sheffield is offering up to 20 well-funded Fellowships
across the university, as detailed below. The Psychology Department is
very keen to host Fellows with compatible research interests. Further
information about the department's research programmes can be found at:
https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/psychology/research
Informal enquiries may be sent to Director of Research, Richard Rowe
(r.rowe(a)sheffield.ac.uk <mailto:r.rowe@sheffield.ac.uk>), or to Head of
Department, Paul Overton (p.g.overton(a)sheffield.ac.uk
<mailto:p.g.overton@sheffield.ac.uk>) or to any Sheffield academic with
relevant research interests.
With best wishes
Richard Rowe

Professor Sir Keith Burnett, Vice-Chancellor of the University of
Sheffield has created up to twenty Vice-Chancellor’s Fellowship
positions. These are open to candidates with a track record of the
highest calibre research and who have the potential to be research
leaders of the future in any academic area. Vice-Chancellor’s
Fellowships support researchers in the development of their programme of
research. We particularly encourage: research proposals of an
interdisciplinary nature that cross boundaries between different fields
of research; pioneering proposals that address new and emerging fields
of research; and proposals that introduce unconventional, innovative
approaches and scientific inventions.
As a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow you will use your research, skills,
knowledge and expertise to contribute and complement the aims of your
Department. Your immediate priority will be to establish a programme of
personal research, which will attract external funding, in order to
develop research of international standing. You will build, lead and
manage your programme of research, undertake a significant piece of
publishable research, and commit significant time and effort in managing
future research activity.
You will develop your reputation through publication in the
highest-quality journals (or other appropriate form of publication as
appropriate to your discipline) and attendance at national and
international conferences, along with a range of other professional
activities. You will be an active contributor to the University’s
research community and will take on supervision and leadership roles
commensurate with your skills and experience. You will supervise and
provide pastoral care or guidance to students, and engage in teaching
and administration duties associated with PhD supervision. You will be
expected to work toward gaining Fellowship of the Higher Education
Academy and will be expected to align your work to departmental teaching
and administrative duties. You will help to raise the profile of the
University through civic engagement activities. As a Fellow you will be
both aspirational about your career and inspirational to others. You
will place strong emphasis on your personal development by committing to
a rigorous development plan.
You must show the potential for research independence and evidence of
research maturity. A PhD in a relevant subject area is essential. You
must have produced and published at least one important publication
without the participation of your PhD supervisor (at the time of
application). You should demonstrate a promising track record of early
achievements appropriate to your research field and career stage,
including significant publications (as main author) in your respective
field. You may also be able to demonstrate a record of invited
presentations at well-established international conferences, and awards
of grants and prizes.
A Research Support Grant will be provided to support your preliminary
research. The amount awarded will be decided on a case-by-case basis,
and determined by your estimation of research ‘running costs’ in the
first eighteen months of appointment. In all cases, £3,000 will be
ring-fenced for costs associated with the publication and dissemination
of your research. You will be supported individually and as a cohort,
through monthly personal and professional development training. You will
be mentored by an internationally excellent academic who is around ten
years ahead in career terms. After the four-year Fellowship period of
this post you will become a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer.
These are open-ended appointments with a start date of 1 October 2015.

This is a great scheme for gettting onto a DPhil (PhD) in Oxford - e.g.,
with potential to do the 3-year main project at FMRIB (eg doing MRI
physics or neuroimaging analysis research). Also including
possibilities of doing the main project in Nottingam as well (as one of
these CDTs is shared with them).
Cheers, Steve.

Stop the cultural destruction of Tibet <http://smithinks.net>
We are seeking three highly motivated PhD students at the Dept. of Experimental Psychology, Ghent University (Belgium), each for a 4-year contract. One candidate will be associated with the lab of Nico Boehler (funded by the FWO), and two candidates with the lab of Ruth Krebs (funded by an ERC starting grant). A common focus of our labs is the investigation of the effect of motivation on various cognitive functions on the behavioral and the neural level (see our webpages for related publications http://expsy.ugent.be/staff/cstaff.htm)
Our department hosts several research groups in the realm of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, creating a dynamic research environment including regular internal talk series as well as presentations by invited speakers. We have access to state-of-the-art equipment including a research-dedicated 3-tesla MR scanner (Siemens), a Biosemi EEG system, as well as an MR-compatible EEG system, eye-tracking devices, and a TMS lab.
All three positions will involve behavioral and fMRI experiments, but extensions to EEG and combined fMRI-EEG are possible. Content-wise, the project with Nico Boehler will investigate the role of reward effects on pro-active and re-active control during conflict resolution and response inhibition. The projects with Ruth Krebs are focused on the interaction between reward and emotion processing and the immediate and long-term effects of such interactions in different tasks.
Candidates are expected to have a Master's degree in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or a closely related discipline at the starting date. Experience with neuroimaging methods as well as programming skills would be an asset.
The planned starting date for all three positions is October 1st 2015, although one of them could also start earlier. Salary is according to standard Belgian regulations (scholarship: ± €22.000,‐ net/year). Although the governing language at Ghent University is Dutch, knowledge of Dutch is not a pre-requisite.
Interested candidates should send their CV, a motivation letter, and contact information of two potential referees (email address) to nico.boehler@ugent or ruth.krebs(a)ugent.be before February 15th 2015. Interviews will be held in March.

Research Engineer in Neuro-Imaging
Background and Mission
The Lyon Neuroscience Research Centre (CRNL, http://crnl.univ-lyon1.fr) includes 11 teams (INSERM, CNRS and Lyon 1 University) interested in the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive functions in humans and animals. The study of cognitive processes associated with memory, attention, pain, perception, action, sleep and consciousness constitute their main interests. One approach to investigating these processes uses brain imaging tools to study functional and/or structural changes, both in healthy subjects and in patients with cognitive dysfunctions.
Four CRNL teams (NeuroPain - CMO – DYCOG – ImpAct, http://crnl.univ- lyon1.fr/index.php/fr/Recherche/Equipes) have partnered to fund a full-time Research Engineer position in structural and functional NeuroImaging to help and guide researchers in the design of experimental protocols and analysis of brain imaging data (general linear modeling, multivariate analysis, functional connectivity, VBM, DTI...). The successful candidate will also be expected to ensure the implementation and integration of analysis programs and tools for optimal use by users, and to train and inform users about new developments in advanced analysis of functional MR data. Data is acquired on MRI scanners (1.5T and 3T), PET and MRI - PET hybrid scanners.
Candidate profile
Engineer or PhD degree with a minimum of 3 years experience in Neuroimaging (supported by publications).
Expertise in brain imaging data processing and analysis using software programs such as SPM, functional connectivity analysis (PCA, ICA, graph theory), "effective" connectivity (e.g. PPI, DCM, SEM) and structural MRI (e.g. VBM, DTI, VLSM).
Solid programming skills in Matlab, FSL, Python
