TMS Equipment

Dear All The Department has been awarded £12,450 from the University's Strategic Equipment Fund for the purchase of Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) equipment. This is first and foremost a contribution towards the start-up needs of Silke Goebel and Beth Jefferies, but once the equipment is purchased and installed in YNiC later this year, it will be available to others when Silke and Beth are not using it. Supine projector in MEG

Dear all Some time-saving tips for when using the supine projector screen in MEG.... Orientation needs to be changed using projector handset: Menu - Main - Mirror- H&V invert Image can be moved up/down using projector handset 'Lens shift' buttons. Image also needs to be much smaller than for standard projector, as it gets 'amplified' by the greater distance. Lisa Brindley

Thursday seminar

Hello all, Well after a rather disappointing turn out last week I can only apologise again for the lack of alcohol following Michael's talk and reassure everyone that normal service will be resumed, the wine is ready and waiting. Even better though is the prospect of a project proposal from Jakke Tamminen, and a brainstorm feedback from Laura Lee. Jakke will be talking about his project "Neural correlates of novel word learning". Laura will talk about "Outcomes of Brainstorming. Comparing fMRI & MEG; category-selectivity in the visual cortex". Laura's asked me to emphasise that this won't be the same as her departmental talk, she'll be talking much more about techniques and analysis rather than results, discussing filtering, block design in MEG and virtual electrodes, so there's sure to be something for everyone. Hello all, Just a reminder that tomorrow evening the Thursday evening session at YNiC will consist of Garreth giving a project presentation for his next MEG study, looking at amplitude modulation, and Angel talking about the usefulness of noise reduction for different data sets. We've got the next couple of weeks' sessions booked, but this is now your chance to volunteer to 'run' a session. You can present work, ideas, problems, or opt for a more traditional journal club approach. If we don't have any volunteers stepping forward, we'll be moving to the "who hasn't stepped back" method instead :) Hope to see you tomorrow, Sam

I plan to present an introduction to oscillatory brain activity, and then discuss the linked article which studies whether 'oscillations in brain potentials are mere epiphenomena'. The article is short, only a letter, and so is not arduous to read in advance. request for data to present at 4-D Users meeting

Dear YNiC Users I will be "YNiC representative" in the Cognitive Roundtable session at the 4-D Users meeting in June. The aim is to showcase MEG data generated by the YNiC analysis tools to the rest of the 4-D User community. Therefore I am looking for some data from cognitive experiments to include in my presentation, particularly if you have also done some beamforming and virtual electrode analysis. The catch is that I will only have 5-7 minutes to deliver the presentation. I am hoping to provide the audience with a brief overview of a few different cognitive studies within this 5-7 minutes. I am planning to present a maximum of 5 experiments (it does not have to be a complete data set) and talk about each study for about 1 min. If you would like your study to be presented in this way at the 4-D Users meeting, please get in touch with me and we can start working on your slides. Hello all, This week's Thursday session will be an "open" brainstorm in which Philip Quinlan will talk about some of his results so far using MEG to investigate the processing of chimaeric sounds. As well as an interesting discussion, the session will provide those who have not yet had a brainstorm an opportunity see what's on offer.
