The Abstract Submission site is now open for the 15th Annual Meeting of
the Organization for Human Brain Mapping to be held in San Francisco,
CA, June 18-22, 2009. Please note that the deadline is *January 11th,
2009 at 11:59 PM CST USA*.
Please click here
<http://www.llmsi.com/index.php?cid=1411910&forward=2670> to submit an
abstract. Though you are not required to register for the meeting prior
to submitting an abstract, the presenter of the abstract must register
for the meeting. To take advantage of the lowest registration fee,
register online at www.humanbrainmapping.org/sanfrancisco
<http://www.llmsi.com/index.php?cid=1411910&forward=2543>_2009_ by
March, 15, 2009. Watch for an email announcing the opening of the
registration site in January.
The Program Committee (PC) of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping's
goal is to keep rejection of abstracts low because it wishes to be
inclusive. The policy for HBM 2009 will be to reject abstracts that are
unethical, incomplete, or contain no data. Statements such as "results
will be presented" are not acceptable.
The PC also wants the number of posters to be at a level that will
provide a positive viewing experience for the attendees. When
submitting abstracts for HBM 2009, please consider whether multiple
abstracts are truly necessary or if the data you are presenting could be
accomplished via submission of one abstract. Thank you for assisting us
in increasing the quality of the OHBM Annual Meeting.
We look forward to welcoming you to HBM 2009. You can count on the
traditional OHBM combination of exciting scientific programs and social
events. Do plan to give yourself a little extra time to experience the
city of San Francisco. This city by the sea is a bustling metropolis
made famous by its most popular landmark, the Golden Gate Bridge. You
won't be disappointed. The city has something for everyone. There is an
excellent mix of art galleries, attractions, museums, quaint
neighborhoods, unique shops, and many ethnic restaurants. For more
information, please visit the conference website at
www.humanbrainmapping.org/sanfrancisco

Hi,
The YNiC cluster is now back in operation. Apologies for the delay but
we were unfortunately hindered by (very) slow delivery of some parts
needed for server maintenance.
All of the machines were imaged overnight to get the client software for
the cluster up-to-date. For staff, you need to make sure your machine
is running image 20081117.
The main change which should be noted is that it is no longer necessary
to apply for your account to be enabled to use the cluster. The step is
now automatically performed at account creation. The docwiki has been
updated to reflect this and the paper-based guides will be updated at
their next revision.
Thanks,
Mark

Gary, Tony and I would like to invite anyone planning a YNiC-based grant
application to think about making a Thursday 4pm presentation outlining
your ideas. We know that our applications will have to be good to be
successful: a presentation would allow YNiC staff and everyone else
involved in YNiC research to offer comments and suggestions that might
help you introduce some additional methods or concepts that you hadn't
thought of. It would also enable us all to know where each other's
research is going, rather than having to wait to hear the results at some
point in the future.
If you are interested / prepared to do this, please contact Rebecca who
will try to accommodate you as early as possible. That's

Dear colleagues
In addition to the celebration of TMS coming to York (Thursday at 4pm)
we also have a visitor on Wednesday who has expressed his interest in
meeting users and discussing the science at YNiC.
Lord Sainsbury who officially opened the Centre in 2005, will be
visiting from 1:45pm to 2:45. He specifically asked to be shown around
YNiC to hear about progress since his last visit. Lord Sainsbury studied
Psychology at Cambridge and is known to retain a personal interest in
the development of our understanding of cognition.
He will be visiting MEG where we will be demonstrating its use in
studying verbal & non-verbal memory, MRI where he will be shown recent
work on use of fMRI in vision sciences and then he will be taken into
the open plan to meet users.
If you are free and would like to meet our visitor then please do come
along to YNiC on Wednesday from 1:30pm onwards.
Lord Sainsbury will be accompanied by the VC and the pro-VC for research
thanks

"The official TMS Lab Opening will take place at YNIC on November 20th
4pm onwards. Beth Jefferies and Silke Goebel will give an introduction

Dear Users
This week's YNiC session (4-5pm) will consist of a discussion led by Prof. Sue Gathercole on strategies for successful grant applications, followed by a YNiC project proposal by George Tsoulas.
1) 16.00-16.45
Professor Sue Gathercole, who is a member of the Medical Research
Council's Neurosciences and Mental Health Board, will lead a discussion of
how to optimize the chances of success with grant applications. Other
researchers with experience of applying successfully for grants, working
for grant awarding bodies etc. will then be invited to contribute their own
thoughts. Winning grant income is not easy in the current climate, but
this event is designed to pool advice and guidance on what you can do to
maximize your chances.
2) 16.45-17.00
George Tsoulas & Silvia Gennari "The computation of ellipsis: Evidence from brain imaging"

Hello all,
Just a reminder that the open plan will be full again this afternoon for
the MSc practical, from 13:15 to 15:15. We will be very busy and there
are unlikely to be machines available, so no matter how eager you are to
arrive early for the seminar at 16:00 you'd be advised to wait till
after 15:15.
This week we have an external speaker, Stephan Moratti. The title of
Stephan's talk is "Steady state visual evoked potentials/ fields:
Advantages of High Signal to Noise Ratio in Basic and Clinical
Psychophysiological Research" and, as ever, everyone is welcome.
Thanks,
Sam

Dear Users,
The MEG system will be undergoing planned, preventative maintenance from
Friday, Nov.7th until Friday, Nov. 14th.
There will be no MEG scanning during this maintenance window.
The work will include a recalibration of the system, an overhaul of the
mechanics of the bed and the replacement of half of the SAD cards. We
replaced the first half in June, and this is the second and final stage in
the replacement.
We thank you for your patience in this matter and apologise for any
inconvenience this may cause.

Dear all,
as many of you know, Laura Lee has just submitted her PhD thesis.
Naturally, we congratulate her for this achievement, and are glad that
she has manged to complete her thesis so promptly. However, we do now
have a Laura Lee shaped hole in the YNiC DSO (Duty Support Officer)
rota. Are there any PhD students, Postdocs, or staff members out there
who would like the honour of being a YNiC DSO as a fortnightly or
monthly fixture on the rota?
If so, please email me.

Dear Users,
at the 'Meet the Researchers' session for new Psychology first years,
there were a number of first years and seconds years interested in getting
involved in brain imaging. Those who showed interest were encouraged to
join the participant pool, and to sign up to the ynic-users mailing list.
Should you be looking for volunteers for your study, now may be a good
time to use the new database and advertise for your study. Similarly, if
you are looking for undergraduates to get involved with your studies,
there are a number of new members of the ynic-users mailing list eager to
learn the finer arts of neuroimaging.
Best wishes,
Michael
Dear Users
This week's YNiC session (4-5pm) will consist of a project proposal by
Ekaterini Klepouosniotou and then Andy Ellis will lead a discussion on
taking your research through to publication.
1) 16.00-16.15. Ekaterini Klepouosniotou "Neural correlates of lexical
ambiguity processing".
2) 16.15-1700. This session will focus on problems that YNiC users may
be experiencing in analyzing their data to the point where they are
happy to submit it for publication, and will try to identify issues
concerning the analysis tools, visualisation tools, statistics etc that
could usefully be addressed. Please use ynic-users(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to
generate ideas for the agenda. The co-ordinator of this meeting will be
