PhD position in cognitive neuroscience of incentive-based decision making
University of Giessen, Germany
Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Psychology department
at the University of Giessen, Germany. The project will investigate
motivational processing and decision making in the human dopaminergic
system. Available methods include fMRI, genetic analysis and
psychopharmacology. Interested candidates will be encouraged to develop
computational modelling skills. The successful candidate will be
expected to teach an undergraduate seminar on biological psychology (2
h/week, approx. 30 weeks/calendar year).
The department offers a research-dedicated MRI scanner with
MRI-compatible eyetracking, EEG, and peripheral physiology equipment. A
new 3T MRI will be installed this year. There is full access to a
genetics lab through local collaboration. We encourage research visits
at collaborating institutes abroad. The successful candidate will have
the opportunity to enroll in a local English-speaking graduate program.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Master’s degree
(or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. neuroscience, psychology,
biology, medicine, neuroinformatics), and with a strong interest in
cognitive neuroscience. Proficiency in English is required. Programming
skills in Matlab and experience with fMRI are beneficial.
The position is available immediately and funded for two years, with the
possibility of extension for one more year. The University of Giessen is
an equal opportunity employer in compliance with German disability laws.
Women and persons with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
Please send your CV, transcripts or degree certificates, a brief
statement of research interests and contact details of two referees by
e-mail to bianca.wittmann(a)psychol.uni-giessen.de. Applications will be
considered until the position is filled.

Dear Users
Today there will be a talk at YNiC (4-5 pm) by Dashiel Munding from
Université d’Aix-Marseille. The title of Dashiel's talk is "The Cortical
Dynamics of Speech Production".
Abstract:
The architecture and timecourse of the perception of visual words and
picture recognition has been relatively well studied, but the process of
articulating words is less well understood as it presents practical
problems that make the acquisition of accurate MEG data difficult. This
brief presentation will discuss a pilot MEG study aimed at capturing and
analysing data from a picture naming protocol, its aims, pitfalls and
the promising but curious particularities of a very preliminary analysis
of the data.
Everyone is welcome to attend.
Best wishes
Rebecca

> We are currently advertising up to three funded 3-year PhD studentships (see attached flyer) that are linked to topics associated with the Nottingham Child Neuroimaging Initiative and form part of an Interdisciplinary Doctoral Training Centre in Child Neuroimaging in Health and Disease. I would be most grateful if you could bring these studentships to the attention of individuals in your institution or research group wishing to pursue doctoral training in Translational Neuroimaging.

Subject: PhD studentship at university of Manchester

*PhD Studentship*
*Audiology and Deafness Research Group, **School of Psychological
Sciences, University of Manchester*
* *
*Physiological mechanisms and perceptual consequences of plasticity in
the human auditory system*
* *
*Professor Kevin Munro and Professor Christopher Plack*
The Audiology and Deafness Group invite applications for the following
3-year PhD studentship. The project is due to commence in either October
2012 or January 2013 subject to the preference of the successful
candidate. Funding attracts full UK/EU tuition fee support, associated
research expenses and an annual tax-free stipend of £13, 590.
The project falls within our research theme of auditory plasticity. This
theme is concerned with understanding the changes that occur over time
in the auditory system due to training, deafness, development or
restoration of input to a deaf auditory system. The translational goal
is to guide fitting and management options for hearing devices.
We are particularly keen to extend our work on plasticity after a period
of deprivation (earplug) or stimulation (amplification) in
normal-hearing individuals. Our recent work has shown that modifying the
sensory environment in this way can, for example, result in a change in
the threshold of the middle ear muscle reflex and alter the perception
of loudness. We aim to understand the physiological mechanisms and
perceptual consequences of this plasticity.
There is some flexibility over how this PhD study will be designed,
allowing significant scope for the successful candidate to shape the
research to suit personal interests and skills development. The project
will involve a combination of physiological and psychophysical
measurement techniques.
The Audiology and Deafness group provides an ideal environment for
research training. We host state-of-the-art facilities including seven
sound-treated booths and several advanced multichannel EEG systems. Our
PhD and early-career researchers form key members, benefitting from the
opportunity to present at our regular seminars and represent the group
at national and international conferences.
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a minimum upper-second
honours degree (or equivalent) in an audiology, psychology, neuroscience
or cognate discipline. A Masters qualification in a related area or
minimum two years professional/research experience would be an advantage.
The studentship is open to UK/EU nationals only due to the nature of the
funding.
Please direct expressions of interest in the following format to
Professor Kevin Munro (kevin.j.munro(a)manchester.ac.uk
<mailto:kevin.j.munro@manchester.ac.uk>):
* A personal statement (750 words maximum) outlining your
suitability for the study, what you hope to achieve from the PhD
and your research experience to date.
* Academic CV
* Copy of academic degree transcripts
* Contact details for two suitable referees
Please direct any questions on the project or suitability to Professor
Munro at the above address. The deadline for applications is *Friday 24
August* *2012*.
