Hi everyone
I hope you enjoyed the extended Bank Holiday weekend (despite the limited
options for activities!).
YNiC staff are continuing to maintain the centre (on an alternating
schedule to maintain social distancing) to ensure that MEG helium fills,
MRI scanner DQAs, and Backups are performed regularly.
We have a couple of points we would like to make YNiC users aware of today:
*Closing Remote Desktop Sessions*
Once you have finished your remote desktop sessions for the day, whenever
possible please log out and shutdown your session (rather than just
suspending).
*Support*
If you have any questions or need assistance, no matter how minor, please
send an email to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, rather than to specific
individuals, as this will be the best way to get help quickly.
*YNiC Journal Club - Thursday 4pm*
This week we will be watching a YouTube video of a talk given by Kendrick
Kay at the OSA Fall Vision Meeting in 2017, titled: "Bottom-up and Top-down
computations in word- and face-selective cortex".
The plan is that we will all join a zoom meeting (details below), and one
of us will host the video for everyone to watch together - we can then
pause during the talk if necessary, or just discuss it at the end. If you
want to watch it in advance, or can't make it on Thursday, the link is
here: https://youtu.be/KNyXL4ObA6s

Hi all
I hope everyone is staying safe and well.
As you may have seen, the University is adding an extra two days to the
Easter holiday this weekend, so the University will be closed from
Wednesday 8th to Monday 13th April. Therefore, YNiC user support will also
be unavailable over that period. You will still be able to use the remote
desktop, if you wish.
More hard work from Joe, Mark and Rich last week means that we've now
increased our remote desktop capacity even further. However, to ensure
that everyone can make use of the remote desktop, please note that any
large analyses must *only *be run on the cluster, and not directly on the
remote desktop. Any users that do not use the remote desktop responsibly
will have their sessions terminated by our IT team, so please adhere to
this restriction. Please see the
information and further page links here:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/Cluster.
I hope you are able to enjoy some work-free time over the bank holiday
weekend! In the meantime, if you are experiencing any technical issues
please send us a ticket at support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, with screenshots and
details of the errors.
All the best

Hi everyone
Apologies for the delay in sending you the paper for this week. Alex Wade
will be presenting the attached paper by Tyler, Lani and Hwang (2018),
Ultrasonic modulation of neural circuit activity, Current Opinion in
Neurobiology.
The link to the google hangout is here: https://meet.google.com/mzy-titj-yrq
Last week we had a little chat at the start, but mainly had cameras and
mic's off so that it was easier to hear the presenter, so we'll go for that
method again this time.
See you (sort of) at 4pm!

Hi everyone
I hope everyone is doing OK?
As you might expect, we don't really have much YNiC news for you these days!
If you experience any issues with the remote desktop that cannot be
resolved by the troubleshooting section on the wiki (
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop), please send us a
ticket to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk and include screenshots and details of
the error. For any other assistance, please make sure you also use the
support ticket system, rather than an individual's email address, so we can
make sure messages don't get missed.
We had a great Journal Club last Thursday, presented by Theo, and we hope
to keep these going. Please let me know if there is a paper you find
interesting and would like to present. This is the link to the google
hangout, for Thursdays at 4pm: https://meet.google.com/mzy-titj-yrq . We
haven't got a paper for this week yet but I'll keep you posted.
Take care,

Hi everyone For those that are interested, we are starting a YNiC Journal
Club on Thursday's at 4pm during this period of social distancing and
isolation. This week, Theo has selected the following paper: Andrew Quinn
et al (2018) Task-Evoked Dynamic Network Analysis Through Hidden Markov
Modeling https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2018.00603/full
This event link should (hopefully) show you a link for joining a 'hangout',
so follow that at 4pm on Thursday if you'd like to join us for a chat about
the paper (or just for some social interaction!). Unfortunately we can't
provide refreshments for this virtual event, but feel free to bring your
own along. All the best, Lauren

Hi everyone
I hope everyone is managing OK with social distancing and the various
challenges that it creates.
Joe and Mark have been working hard to increase our remote desktop capacity
for users - we had a few teething issues which have been mostly resolved.
If you haven't yet connected to the remote desktop please make sure you
read the instructions here
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop, and ensure you are
first connected to the University VPN before connecting to the YNiC remote
desktop; note that we have extended access to all users now.
As usual, if you are experiencing any issues with the remote desktop that
cannot be resolved by the troubleshooting section in the above page, please
send us a ticket to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk and include screenshots and
details of the errors you are experiencing.
Please be reminded that YNiC is closed to users, and projects that have
been impacted by the cancelled scans should submit a scan reimbursement
form to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, if they haven't already done so (you can
find this form at the bottom of this page https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/forms
).
YNiC staff are working from home but we are doing a daily check-in of the
centre, as well as essential maintenance work on the scanners twice a week.
Stay safe everyone, and wash your hands. :-)
All the best

Dear all,
We have identified an issue with the latest X2Go remote desktop client
which prevents people from connecting to their remote sessions.
To work around this issue, you will need to use a specific version of
the client rather than the latest one. We have updated the wiki page
with details for new users
(https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop)
For existing users, you can check which version of the X2Go client you have
by going to Help
-> About X2Go Client. The version number will be listed there as
4.x.y.z. If you do not have 4.1.2.0 or 4.1.2.1, please follow the
re-install instructions below.
* On Windows, find "Add or Remove Programs" in System settings, find
"X2go Client for Windows" and choose Uninstall
* On Mac, right click on the X2goClient application and "Move to Trash"
Now re-install the correct version. For Windows, this is 4.1.2.0 and
for Mac this is 4.1.2.1. We have included direct links below, but you
can also navigate to https://code.x2go.org/releases and then find the
correct version from there. If using a Mac, please ensure to get the
right version for your Mac OS version.
* Windows:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-win32/x2goclient/releases/4.1.2.0-201…
* Mac 10.13 or later:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-macosx/x2goclient/main/4.1.2.1/x2gocl…
* Mac 10.11 or 10.12:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-macosx/x2goclient/main/4.1.2.1/x2gocl…
* Mac 10.9 or 10.10:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-macosx/x2goclient/main/4.1.2.1/x2gocl…
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

Dear All,
The email below was sent earlier today by acting HoD of the Department of
Psychology, Tim Andrews. We will adopt the recommendation not to conduct
research at YNiC because of the face-to-face contact with volunteer
participants. All scans booked tomorrow and onwards will not be
performed. We have been in touch with all teams that have bookings today.
I know this is frustrating, but there is no choice in this matter given the
government advice concerning non-essential contact, as Tim rightly outlined
in his message.
Scans booked will receive reimbursement of time as per policy. If you are
affected please complete the scan reimbursement form available of the ynic
website and return it to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk.
We will be back in touch when we have any updates about when scanning can
resume. In the meantime, remote access has been extended to all users to
allow work to be done at home.
Best wishes
Tony

Subject: Update
To: All Staff and PhD Students <all-psyc-group(a)york.ac.uk>
Hello everyone,
I am sure that you are all concerned about recent events. I don't have any
additional recommendations except to heed the advice that we are getting
from government and university. There has been a lot of hard work going on
in the university to update students and staff about how to deal with the
current issues, but also to plan for the future.
I would just like to update you on work going on in the department. We have
been working hard to make sure that key staff have remote access, so we can
continue with current assessments. There is a lot of ongoing work to plan
for online teaching and assessment next term. Additional provision has also
been provided by servers in YNiC, so staff can work remotely. I would like
to thank all the people who have been working hard on this.
I have consulted with colleagues in the department about face-to-face
testing of participants. Given that the advice is to avoid all unnecessary
social contact, we recommend stopping face-to-face testing for the
foreseeable future. We are looking into how we can help with data
collection by moving to online testing.
We are likely to be encouraged to work at home where possible in the near
future. Please take the time to make sure that you have all you need for
this. We may need to think imaginatively about how we can make best use of
our time given the circumstances.
Finally, please take care of yourself and each other. Also, take the time
to look out for vulnerable people in the community. It is going to be a
very worrying time for them. However, let's hope that things will get
better soon.
Best wishes,
Tim

Dear all,
Due to recent events, we are aware that more staff and students will be
needing to work remotely than is usually the case. To enable everyone
who uses YNiC to work in as flexible a way as possible at this time, we
have temporarily added more resource to our remote desktop setup and
removed the restrictions which normally limit its use to those at PhD
level and above.
For those (including students) who have not used the remote desktop
setup before, you will need to take the following steps:
1. Register for and set up access to the University VPN
https://www.york.ac.uk/it-services/services/vpn
(if you are a YNiC user who does not have a UoY account, please
email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk and we will make alternate arrangements)
2. Set up the X2Go remote desktop application. We have a
comprehensive guide here:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop
Note that you will need to log in to the YNiC website in order to
read the documentation (see the link at the top right of the website).
3. When you wish to connect to the remote desktop service, you will
need to connect to the University VPN and only then connect to the
remote desktop service.
We have set up a single page for users with information about remote
working at YNiC. This page is at:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/RemoteWorking
We would ask that support issues are filed in the usual way, by emailing
support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk. In addition, staff will be monitoring the
"Town Square" channel on the YNiC Discuss server at:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/discuss
We will continue to monitor performance of the remote systems over the
next few days and will do our best to match the service capacity with
the demand from staff and students.

Good morning everyone
We just have a few reminders for users today.
Firstly, as most of you will already be aware, YNiC open plan has hand
sanitiser and surface wipes available for use. Should you wish to use them
they can both be found near the coffee machine.
Secondly, we would like to remind operators of our policy for cleaning
scanner equipment between participants - please ensure this is always done
after every participant is scanned. We also have a sink and hand sanitiser
available in each scanner control room, as well as in the MRI corridor.
*Closure:*
Over the Easter period we will have a 'soft closure' from *Thursday 2nd
April until Friday 17th April*. During this time there will be no operator
cover provided and no user support, but users are still welcome to use open
plan and book the scanners in the non-operator covered slots.
*Level 0 operator Training:*
Our next scheduled Level 0 training session will take place after the
closure on Wednesday* 22nd April at 9:30am*. Please note that users
requesting Level 0 training should be a PhD, RA/Postdoc, or staff, and
should already have a project proposal submitted to YNiC.
All users that wish to be operator trained must have First Aid training.
Please ensure that this has been completed, or is booked in, before
contacting us to arrange training. Email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk if you
have any questions or wish to book on to this session, and include which
scanner you wish to be trained on. Please note that places are limited and
are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Training must be booked
at least a week before the session date, in order to reserve the scanner
booking.
*YNiC User Inductions:*
If you are aware of any new students/staff that will require access to YNiC
and/or an IT account, they must attend a YNiC user induction. Our next
induction date will be Wednesday 1st April at 9:30am. Please ask them to
contact support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to sign up.
Hope you have a good week!

Good afternoon everyone
*24 hour access*
Many of you will be pleased to know that YNiC users will now have *24hr
access to open plan*. If you use the building after 5pm or before 8:30am,
please use the main YNiC entrance, and the toilet that is in that entrance
hall (between YNiC and CHyM).
You will need to have both your YNiC fob AND your University card with you
to get into the building - use your University card on the black card
reader on the outside door, and then use your YNiC fob as usual on all
other YNiC doors.
Please be reminded that we keep a First Aid kit on the bookshelf to the
right of the coffee machine, and that you can call security if you need
emergency assistance on 01904 323333 - this number will be on display on
the notice board.
We will review this access over the coming weeks; if you have any questions
or concerns please contact support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk (operators will receive
a separate email shortly detailing the new key-holder process).
*YNiC Science Social*
The next Science Social will be given by Andre Gouws, on "Optimising FSL
and a few other tricks to make data processing easier, more efficient and
less problematic", and will take place this* Thursday 12th March at 4pm*.
At the Science Social events we have pizza and drinks, so we look forward
to seeing many of you there!
For a list of the upcoming Thursday sessions, please visit

Good afternoon everyone
I mainly have reminders and updates for you today, but I also wanted to let
users know that a couple of places have become available on a group *First
Aid training course* this Thursday 5th March, which a number of the YNiC
staff are attending (don't worry, noone's training expires before the
5th!). Places will be filled on a first-come first-served basis (I can
pass on details for payment later), and it would be beneficial for any
users that intend to begin operator training in the coming months. Please
email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to reserve one of the remaining places.
*Booking system changes:*
The updates to the booking system have now been made; when making bookings
you will see that you need to specify both the 'Operator' (must be Level 1
or above) and the 'Co-Operator' (must be a Level 0 or above) when you
book. All other functionality for booking scans remains the same. Note
that this update does *not* reflect any changes in policy or procedure; as
before, two operators must be present at all times in the control room
while a participant is being scanned (one or both of the operators must be
a Level 1 or above).
If you are booking in an operator covered slot, you can specify whether you
will need both/one/none of the YNiC operators. If you are using your own
operators, then the 'Operator' must be a Level 1 or above who is listed on
the project as an operator, and the 'Co-Operator' can be anyone that is
listed on the project as a co-investigator and has current Level 0 (or
above) status (the project PI can add individuals as co-investigators via
PTS https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/pts/, but to make a co-investigator a
listed Level 1 operator on a project the PI will need to request this via a
support ticket).
As with the previous system, once the booking has been made you won't be
able to amend the operators, so if any changes need to be made you must
email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to request amendments.
We will update the wiki information shortly, but if you experience any
problems or have any questions please do let us know at
support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk.
*Closure:*
Over the Easter period will have a 'soft closure' from *Thursday 2nd April
until Friday 17th April*. Over this period there will be no operator cover
provided and no user support, but users are still welcome to use open plan
and book the scanners in the non-operator covered slots.
*First Aid Training*
As previously communicated, as of this month any operator without a valid
First Aid Certificate on record will not be able to act as an operator on
any scan *until the training certificate is received by YNiC*. Once
received, please bring the certificate to reception to be copied and
scanned, and your account will be updated.
*Open Plan Teaching:*
Please be reminded that teaching will take place in YNiC open plan at
12-4pm this Tuesday and Friday. During these times, the area will be
closed to anybody not involved in the teaching.
Please ensure that this has been completed, or is booked in, before

are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Training must be booked
at least a week before the session date, in order to reserve the scanner
booking.

If you are aware of any new students/staff that will require access to YNiC
and/or an IT account, they must attend a YNiC user induction. Our next
induction date will be Wednesday 18th March at 10am. Please ask them to
contact support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to sign up.

Good afternoon everyone,
We have some important information for you today (honestly!).
*Closure:*
Over the Easter period will have a 'soft closure' from *Thursday 2nd April
until Friday 17th April*. Over this period there will be no operator cover
provided and no user support, but users are still welcome to use open plan
and book the scanners in the non-operator covered slots.
Please note that during this period there may be days when there is no
Level 3 operator available for authorising contraindications for scanning,
therefore it is important that participants are screened well in advance of
the scan to identify contraindications and obtain the necessary
signature(s).
*Booking system changes:*
We are updating the booking system; changes will come into effect from next
Monday 2nd March. The main change you will see on the Project Tracking
System when booking scans, is that there will be an additional operator
dropdown list so that you can select the second operator. If you are
booking in operator-covered slots you can select one or both operators as
YNiC operators (or neither if you don't require any YNiC operators).
If you are using your own operators, then the 'primary operator' must be a
Level 1 or above who is listed on the project as an operator, and the
second operator can be anyone that is listed on the project and has current
Level 0 (or above) status (the project PI can add individuals to projects
via PTS https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/pts/). As with the previous system,
once the booking has been made you won't be able to amend the operators, so
if any changes need to be made you must email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to
request amendments.
We will update the wiki information shortly, but if you experience any
problems or have any questions please do let us know at
support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk. All other functionality for booking scans remains
the same.
*Reminder - First Aid Training:*
All operators must attend an 'Emergency First Aid at Work' one-day training
course. Courses should be organised by the project PI with a relevant
training provider (e.g. St Johns Ambulance, Red Cross); these providers can
also run group training sessions (8 or more people) on-site, so labs may
wish to coordinate their operators to attend training on the same day, at a
location of your choice.
*We will be enforcing this requirement from 1st March 2020*. Any operator
(including L0) who does not have a valid First Aid Certificate will not be
permitted to act as an operator until YNiC has the certificate on file.
*Project Presentation:*
This week we have a project presentation from Gabriela Ravela on Thursday
27th Feb at 4pm in YNiC open plan, titled: "Neural correlates of face
perception in people with developmental prosopagnosia". Talks are followed
by refreshments. We hope to see you there!
For a list of the upcoming Thursday sessions, please visit
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/events/thursday-sessions.
*Open Plan Teaching:*
Please be reminded that teaching will take place in YNiC open plan at
12-4pm this Friday. During these times, the area will be closed to anybody
not involved in the teaching.
*Level 0 operator Training:*
Our March training date is now full, so the next scheduled Level 0 training
session will take place after the closure on Wednesday* 22nd April at
9:30am*. Please note that users requesting Level 0 training should be a
PhD, RA/Postdoc, or staff, and should already have a project proposal
submitted to YNiC. Please email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk if you have any
questions or wish to book on to this session, and include which scanner you
wish to be trained on. Please note that places are limited and are
allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Training must be booked at
least a week before the session date, in order to reserve the scanner
booking.
*YNiC User Inductions:*
If you are aware of any new students/staff that will require access to YNiC
and/or an IT account, they must attend a YNiC user induction. Our next
induction date will be Wednesday 26th February at 10am. Please ask them to
contact support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to sign up.
Hope you have a great week!

Dear Tony
I just thought I'd drop you a line about MEGUK 2020 (6th-7th Apr), as we
are currently in the call-for-abstracts phase. This year's conference in
Cambridge is designed to be more for the students benefit, but I wanted
to make sure that all the wonderful PIs at York who are interested in
MEG were aware of the conference, and letting their postdocs and
students know about it. Students are encouraged to submit poster and
talk abstracts (there are, of course, poster prizes). It's a great place
to showcase what they are working on to a friendly community of peers.
If you would like to filter these links across to them, I'd be much
obliged:

Hi all
Just a couple of reminders for you this week, plus a project presentation:
*Project Presentation - Thursday 4pm:*This week we have a project
presentation from Bronte McKeown on Thursday 20th Feb at 4pm in YNiC open
plan, titled: "Exploring differences in neural activity between left of
bang and right of bang threatening situations". Talks are followed by
refreshments. We hope to see you there!
For a list of the upcoming Thursday sessions, please visit
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/events/thursday-sessions.
*Open Plan Teaching:*
Please be reminded that teaching will be taking place in YNiC open plan at
12-4pm this Tuesday and Friday. During these times, the area will be
closed to anybody not involved in the teaching.
*Level 0 operator Training:*
Our next scheduled Level 0 training session will take place on Wednesday
11th March at 10am-12pm. Please note that users requesting Level 0
training should be a PhD, RA/Postdoc, or staff, and should already have a
project proposal submitted to YNiC. Please email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk
if you have any questions or wish to book on to this session, and include
which scanner you wish to be trained on. Please note that sessions are
limited to 4 trainees, which will be allocated on a first-come first-served
basis. Training must be booked at least a week before the session date, in
order to reserve the scanner booking.

Hi everyone
We have a few updates for you this week, before the regular notices about
training and inductions.
*Scales for both MRI Scan Rooms:*
Following suggestions from some of our users, we have purchased a second
set of weighing scales, so that we now have scales in each scan room. The
original scales have been moved from the MRI corridor to the Siemens
control room, and the new scales are in GE (on this set, simply tap your
foot on the edge of the unit to 'wake up', and wait until zero is displayed
before asking your participant to step on).
*Expiry of operator-covered slots:*
Please be advised that any unused operator-covered slots will expire at
midnight 2 working days before the slot, e.g. for slots on a Thursday you
would need to book before the end of the day (11:59pm) on the Tuesday.
This will enable YNiC staff to effectively carry out other centre
responsibilities, with advanced notice of the cover required.
It should be noted that scan bookings should always be made at least a day
before the scan session, with the participants also added to the booking
24hrs in advance.
*Reminder - First Aid Training:*
All operators must attend an 'Emergency First Aid at Work' one-day training
course. Courses should be organised by the project PI with a relevant
training provider (e.g. St Johns Ambulance, Red Cross); these providers can
also run group training sessions (8 or more people) on-site, so labs may

permitted to act as an operator until YNiC has the certificate on file.
*Level 0 operator Training:*

11th March at 10am-12pm. Please note that users requesting Level 0
training should be a PhD, RA/Postdoc, or staff, and should already have a
project proposal submitted to YNiC. Please email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk

which scanner you wish to be trained on. Please note that sessions are
limited to 4 trainees, which will be allocated on a first-come first-served
basis. Training must be booked at least a week before the session date, in
order to reserve the scanner booking.
That's everything folks!

(Sorry for cross posting - active operators have already received this)
While we do not scan patients or research participants who are pregnant,
we are aware that there may be times when staff, operators and
technicians who themselves are pregnant may be required to enter the
inner controlled area (the "scan room") as part of their working routine.
We have taken advice from published guidance and from the University of
York Radiation Officer* and have adjusted our policies and procedures to
reflect good working practices to manage such situations and minimize
risk. (* While MRI does not expose persons to ionizing radiation, the
use of MRI is governed by IRMER guidelines).
The key points to note are summarized in section 5.6 of the Local Rules
for MRI Operators (v6.0) and reads as follows:
---------------------
Pregnancy and work in the inner controlled area
It is the responsibility of an operator or any member of staff who
requires access to the inner controlled area to notify the YNiC Director
when they are pregnant.
Individuals who are pregnant are permitted to operate the MRI scanners,
including taking participants into and out of the controlled area, that
is the scanner room. However, they may not remain in the controlled
area (the scanner room) during a scan. To be clear that means that
operators who are pregnant must not act as chaperones in the scanner room.
In the later stages of pregnancy, emergency removal of individuals from
the scanner is likely to prove a challenge to pregnant operators in
terms of manual handling. We will work with operators to ensure that
they will not be expected to operate when their capacity to perform
manual handling is limited by pregnancy.
This policy has been developed in order to conform with recommendations
outlined in the British Institute of Radiology's publication 'Pregnancy
and Work in Diagnostic Imaging Departments - 2nd Edition'.
--------------------------
If you have any queries please do contact us.
Best wishes,

Dear All,
The University of York has shared advice concerning the Coronavirus in the
email message copied below. I am distributing it to all users to ensure
those users outwith the University are informed. I can also add that there
are multiple points in YNiC, where alcohol-based hand rub is available and
users are encouraged to use these cleansers to reduce the risk of infection
transmission.
Best wishes
Tony
Dear colleagues
As you will be aware, the Coronavirus is a new infection detected in Wuhan,
China. The University is monitoring the situation and sharing the guidance
issued by Public Health England. The University expects staff and students
to follow that guidance. To date there have been no confirmed cases in the
UK and the risk is still considered low. However, Public Health England
have issued new advice yesterday.
*Advice for Travellers from Wuhan*If you have returned from Wuhan in the
last 14 days:
- stay indoors and avoid contact with other people as you would with
other flu viruses
- telephone the NHS helpline on 111 to inform them of your recent travel
to the city
- contact your department and explain the situation
*Please follow this advice even if you do not have symptoms of the virus.*
If you develop a fever, difficulty breathing or a cough, you should
continue to follow the advice above. Please do not leave your home until
you have been given advice by a medical professional.
*Advice for everyone else*
*Precautionary measures*Advice from Public Health England to reduce
exposure to and transmission of the virus include:
- Frequently clean hands by using alcohol-based hand rub or soap and
water
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
- Cover mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing and sneezing
- Bin the tissue immediately and wash hands
- Avoid close contact with anyone who has a fever and cough
*Symptoms*Common signs of infection include fever, coughing, sneezing,
shortness of breath or breathing difficulties.
*What to do if you think you may have the virus*If you develop symptoms and
you have had contact with someone who has recently been in the affected
areas of China, you should telephone the NHS 111 helpline.
If you are registered with a GP (such as Unity Health) you may make an
appointment but should phone ahead and explain your situation before
visiting the practice.
Anyone who needs medical advice but is not registered with a GP should
phone the NHS helpline by dialling 111.
*Travel*The UK Foreign & Commonwealth Office
<https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/china> has advised against all
travel to Wuhan and Hubei Province and have *advised against all but
essential travel to the rest of mainland China*. In addition, Chinese
authorities have introduced travel restrictions in a number of cities in
Hubei province.
Public Health England also advises anyone travelling to China to avoid
contact with sick people, animals, animal markets and to maintain good
hygiene.
*Travel reminder*Staff and students travelling on authorised University
business outside of the UK *must *log their trip on the Travel Log and
adhere to travel risk assessment requirements
<https://www.york.ac.uk/admin/hsas/safetynet/Insurance/travel_insurance.htm>
.
*Student Support*Students were sent this same email and were also advised
to contact the University’s Student Hub in addition to telephoning 111 if
they have been in Wuhan in the past 14 days, or if they are worried about
friends and family and need support.
