*Alexian Brothers Health System*is proud of the fact that we continue to build upon values established more than 800 years ago. Although many things have changed with the times, our commitment to respect, compassion, and quality care—for every patient and every professional—remains as strong as ever. Our network currently consists of four hospitals, as well as our immediate-care and occupational health centers.
The *Illinois MEG Center* is engaged in both patient care and research activities with respect to the relationships between behavior and brain structure and function. Exploration of brain function involves behavioral and cognitive testing, Magnetoencephalography (MEG), Electroencephalography (EEG), Magnetic Resonance Imaging, functional MRI, and Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy which are performed on a wide range of subject populations including adults and children with epilepsy, brain tumors, autism, and psychiatric disease.
The primary focus of the Illinois MEG Center is to provide diagnostic testing services to a wide range of subject populations including adults and children with epilepsy, brain tumors, strokes, traumatic brain injuries, various degenerative brain disorders, and psychiatric disease. A Magnetoencephalographic (MEG) Technologist records the electromagnetic activity of the brain and nervous system using a variety of techniques and instruments under the supervision of the Medical Director or Center Manager. A technologist in this category will have experience with the basics of performing an EEG, and will have acquired skill in applying EEG electrodes in accordance with the International 10-20 system of electrode placement. Additionally, the technologist will be able to identify common artifacts and perform basic evoked potential procedures. With training, will be expected to become facile with basic electrophysiological and MRI data manipulation and import into advanced analysis programs.
*The MEG/EEG Technologist is expected to administer diagnostic testing services to the designated patient age groups:*

4. Demonstrates knowledge of the peripheral nervous system, diseases related to electroneurodiagnostic medicine, instrumentation, basic electronics, and electrical safety.
5. Prepares the patient, accurately applies a variety of surface electrodes using collodian; obtains 3-space digitization of fiducial landmarks using a polhemus device for co-registration of physiologic data with a volumetric MRI; distinguishes between normal and abnormal waveforms; Acquires data using the appropriate protocols as requested by the referring physician. Examinations may include collection of spontaneous data, and evoked responses of visual, auditory, somatosensory, and or motor cortices; describes all abnormal clinical manifestations observed during the test; recognizes physiological and non-physiological artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them.
6. Performs the appropriate tuning of the MEG system for all recordings. Manipulates instrument controls for optimal recording of electromagnetic responses.
7. Assists investigators performing research studies as needed by preparing or manipulating the instrument and applying surface recording electrodes under the direction of the MEG Center Director, Manager, or coordinator.
8. Cleans and disinfects all instrumentation and equipment and ensures it is in good operating condition. Detects instrument malfunctions, and makes minor maintenance adjustments or reports the need for major repairs. Places cleaned EEG electrodes and caps in clear plastic bags for storage.
