PhD position at the intersection between social neuroscience and machine learning "Brain networks of social interaction across connectivity types" The Human Brain Project leverages authentically interdisciplinary neuroscience. In an innovative approach, we will investigate the neurobiological network architecture underlying the entire spectrum of social-interaction skills, including emotion, perspective-taking, and empathy. We target social processes in the brain because they most clearly set human beings apart from other species (TEDx talk: http://bit.ly/VJES2Q). Given the challenging nature of social cognition, we will capitalize on data-driven methods that learn patterns in four different types of brain connectivity data with a minimum of a-priori assumptions. This goal will necessitate close collaboration between the neuroimaging methods group in Paris, France, and the cognitive neuroscience group in Düsseldorf/Jülich, Germany. Completion of this PhD program allows you to become part of the badly needed, new generation of computationally trained imaging neuroscientists. What you would work on - Work on questions that matter with multivariate statistical tools applicable beyond imaging neuroscience, in teams that are knowledgeable, passionate, and fun. - We aim at the characterization of the neurobiology of social cognition as a whole. This includes both low-level (e.g. face processing) as well as high-level (e.g. Theory of Mind) aspects. We will perform a variety of connectivity and data-mining approaches. - Aimed at multi-modal connectivity characterization, the project will involve 1) meta-analytic functional connectivity (MACM), 2) resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC), 3) structural covariance (SCOV), and 4) diffusion tensor imaging (DTI). - All methods are established, making this position an excellent opportunity to learn various approaches for the analysis of structural and functional neuroimaging data - This will allow for a comprehensive neurobiological model of social interaction processes in healthy humans that is cross-validated across methods What we expect - High motivation for inter-disciplinary challenges - an analytical, problem-solving mindset - MSc or equivalent in computer science, physics, biomedical engineering, psychology, medicine, biology (technical background is strongly preferred) - Talent with computers, programming experience (especially in Python) is strongly preferred - Experience in MRI analysis (SPM, FSL) is preferred - Fluent in written+oral English language - Geographic mobility: first part of the PhD will be in Paris, second part will be in Düsseldorf/Jülich What we provide We guarantee a three-year PhD position, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). Three Early Stage Researcher positions: Understanding and predicting developmental language abilities and disorders in multilingual Europe (PredictAble) The Marie SkÅ?odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Innovative Training Networks (ITN) â??PredictAbleâ?? invites applications for three positions of Early Stage Researchers (ESRs, PhD students), available from April 1st, 2015 (Berlin, Paris, Potsdam). *The first position (ESR12) * *Development of experimental tools and materials valid for cross-linguistic research and for cross-linguistic diagnostic assessments in infants and children*** *University of Potsdam, Germany * Aim of this project it to compile diagnostic test instruments and experimental settings that can be used in different languages to evaluate linguistic competencies in infants and children. The successful candidate will collect, test, and adapt language assessments that can be used across the different languages in PredictAble (Catalan, Finish, French, German, Hungarian, Spanish) in cooperation with all partners. After completion of the language assessment tools, he/she will develop, test, and adapt experimental designs which can be used in very young children with the NIRS technology. Both cities have a high quality of life at modest living costs. *The second position (ESR13)* *Development of a comprehensive analysis software for analysing NIRS data acquired in very young children * *NIRx Medizintechnik GmbH, Berlin, Germany* The goal of this project is the development of novel algorithms for the processing, analysis, and spatial mapping of Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS, optical imaging) functional imaging data of brain activity in very young children. While over the last decade NIRS has become a viable research tool in many domains, because of its non-restricting nature it has gained special appeal for the functional brain mapping of children. The proposed work aims at addressing challenges that are particular to this subject group and which at present still hamper its wider use, such as the prevalence of fractured/segmented data, the high likelihood of motion artifacts, and the specific measuring geometry/anatomy. The newly developed tools are expected to be developed and applied within the framework of NIRxâ?? existing open access NIRS analysis software in a modular and expandable fashion. Besides features specific to small child studies we also anticipate the development of more general neuroimaging software functionality such as data integration with other modalities (e.g., EEG, behavioral), data import/export capabilities, and a strong focus on usability. The work is expected to adhere to best practices for code development and documentation. The programming is expected to be predominantly implemented in MATLABâ?¢. The candidate should hold a Masterâ??s (or comparable) degree in the Computer Sciences, Electrical Engineering, (Bio-) Physics or similar disciplines with a strong background in data analysis and programming. Ideally, the candidate has prior experience in bio-imaging data processing/work flow and is familiar with the applicable industry standards (e.g., DICOM). Experience or interest in experimental work in bio-imaging and/or psychology, while not required, is regarded beneficial. The location for this research will mainly be at NIRx Medizintechnik GmbH in Berlin, Germany, with expected close collaboration and visits to the partnering institutes, especially University of Potsdam, Germany and UniversitÃ© Paris Descartes, France. The German branch is located in the heart of Berlin, one of the most culturally vibrant cities in the world and home to a lively start-up scene. *The third position (ESR14) * *Infant/child electrophysiology, implementation of signal processing tools* *Paris Descartes University, Paris, France* The mission of this ESR is to develop experimental designs and data analysis tools for electrophysiological (EEG) measures, allowing the early identification of language delay at the single participant level. This is a particularly challenging task with young infants and children who typically provide noisy EEG data due to movement and other artifacts. The ESR will be expected to design and run experimental paradigms that can achieve high quality data in individual participants, and enable co-recording with eye-tracking and NIRS. The ESR will also be required to adapt existing analysis tools (e.g. EEGLab) and to develop new ones, e.g. using high-density EEG recordings (source localization, time-frequency analysis) to provide the most suitable methods for group as well as individual level data analysis, leading to the identification of early neural predictors of language delay. Interfacing the EEG analysis tools with NIRS, eye-tracking and other methods will also be necessary. The programming is expected to be predominantly implemented in MATLABâ?¢. The ESR is expected to pursue a PhD degree within the program. Therefore, prerequisite for the candidate is the academic merit to be admitted into a PhD program. The candidate should hold a Masterâ??s (or comparable) degree in Psychology, Neuroscience, Biomedical Engineering, (Bio)Physics or similar disciplines with a strong background in data analysis and programming. *Job Summary: * The Pasqual Maragall Foundation <http://www.fpmaragall.org/en_index.html> invites applications for a full-time postdoctoral position to conduct post-processing and analyzing of MRI neuroimaging data (e.g. structural, fMRI, DWI), as part of a clinical research program of the Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Centre <http://www.barcelonabeta.org/> (Barcelona, Spain). *Principal Responsibilities: * The primary responsibility of this position includes creating new hypothesis on the initial pathophysiological events of AD based on neuroimaging data within the Foundation’s Alzheimer’s disease clinical research and its flagship project, the Alzheimer and Families (ALFA). The ALFA study is a large longitudinal cohort of sons and daughters of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) patients, to explore the preclinical stage of this condition with the aim of identifying novel risk factors and biomarkers. Within this study, over 2700 volunteers have already been screened and a comprehensive amount of data has been collected, including blood samples, mental health, quality of life and risk factors, as well as, neuroimaging procedures to assess brain function. In this regard, over 500 participants already have undergone an MRI protocol and PET imaging is underway. This study will enhance our knowledge of the processes involved before the onset of AD to develop interventions aimed to prevent or delay the disease. The Barcelonaβeta Brain Research Center (Barcelonaβeta) is a new research infrastructure, constituted by the Pasqual Maragall Foundation and with the participation of the Pompeu Fabra University, dedicated to research on Alzheimer’s disease. The new building will be completed by summer 2014, and will contain excellent technical facilities including a research-dedicated 3T MR scanner, dedicated to clinical research on neurodegenerative diseases. Barcelonaβeta is a research institute affiliated to Pompeu Fabra University and is also part of the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park (PRBB), a large research facility that hosts seven different research institutions related to biomedical research, including the Hospital del Mar Research Institute (IMIM), the Experimental and Health Sciences Department (CEXS) of the UPF, the Regenerative Medicine Centre of Barcelona (CMRB), and the Centre for Research in Environmental Epidemiology (CREAL), among others, in a multidisciplinary, collaborative and stimulating international environment in close contact with a clinical setting, thus conducive to translational research. *Required Qualifications: * ・PhD in Neuroscience, Medicine, Psychology, Neuropsychology or related disciplines. ・Strong background in the design of experimental protocols with fMRI and in the interpretation of neuroimaging research results. ・Excellent scientific writing skills. ・Ability to think independently and work collaboratively. *Benefits:* ・Starting date: May 2015. ・The postdoctoral position is scheduled initially for two years (open to renewal). ・Salary will depend on experience. *Additional Information: * To apply, please submit a single PDF file containing the following: 1) Cover letter describing research interests and relevant background; 2) CV with list of publications; 3) The names of three individuals who could provide reference letters.
