Hi,
The YNiC cluster is now back in operation. Apologies for the delay but
we were unfortunately hindered by (very) slow delivery of some parts
needed for server maintenance.
All of the machines were imaged overnight to get the client software for
the cluster up-to-date. For staff, you need to make sure your machine
is running image 20081117.
The main change which should be noted is that it is no longer necessary
to apply for your account to be enabled to use the cluster. The step is
now automatically performed at account creation. The docwiki has been
updated to reflect this and the paper-based guides will be updated at
their next revision.
Thanks,
Mark

Gary, Tony and I would like to invite anyone planning a YNiC-based grant
application to think about making a Thursday 4pm presentation outlining
your ideas. We know that our applications will have to be good to be
successful: a presentation would allow YNiC staff and everyone else
involved in YNiC research to offer comments and suggestions that might
help you introduce some additional methods or concepts that you hadn't
thought of. It would also enable us all to know where each other's
research is going, rather than having to wait to hear the results at some
point in the future.
If you are interested / prepared to do this, please contact Rebecca who
will try to accommodate you as early as possible. That's

Dear colleagues
In addition to the celebration of TMS coming to York (Thursday at 4pm)
we also have a visitor on Wednesday who has expressed his interest in
meeting users and discussing the science at YNiC.
Lord Sainsbury who officially opened the Centre in 2005, will be
visiting from 1:45pm to 2:45. He specifically asked to be shown around
YNiC to hear about progress since his last visit. Lord Sainsbury studied
Psychology at Cambridge and is known to retain a personal interest in
the development of our understanding of cognition.
He will be visiting MEG where we will be demonstrating its use in
studying verbal & non-verbal memory, MRI where he will be shown recent
work on use of fMRI in vision sciences and then he will be taken into
the open plan to meet users.
If you are free and would like to meet our visitor then please do come
along to YNiC on Wednesday from 1:30pm onwards.
Lord Sainsbury will be accompanied by the VC and the pro-VC for research
thanks
Gary

"The official TMS Lab Opening will take place at YNIC on November 20th
4pm onwards. Beth Jefferies and Silke Goebel will give an introduction
to Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) and an overview of their
research to date using TMS. This will be followed by a practical
demonstration of TMS. Please join us to mark this occasion and stay for
drinks and nibbles. This is also an opportunity to ask us any questions
you might have about TMS. "

Dear Users
This week's YNiC session (4-5pm) will consist of a discussion led by Prof. Sue Gathercole on strategies for successful grant applications, followed by a YNiC project proposal by George Tsoulas.
1) 16.00-16.45
Professor Sue Gathercole, who is a member of the Medical Research
Council's Neurosciences and Mental Health Board, will lead a discussion of
how to optimize the chances of success with grant applications. Other
researchers with experience of applying successfully for grants, working
for grant awarding bodies etc. will then be invited to contribute their own
thoughts. Winning grant income is not easy in the current climate, but
this event is designed to pool advice and guidance on what you can do to
maximize your chances.
2) 16.45-17.00
George Tsoulas & Silvia Gennari "The computation of ellipsis: Evidence from brain imaging"

Hello all,
Just a reminder that the open plan will be full again this afternoon for
the MSc practical, from 13:15 to 15:15. We will be very busy and there
are unlikely to be machines available, so no matter how eager you are to
arrive early for the seminar at 16:00 you'd be advised to wait till
after 15:15.
This week we have an external speaker, Stephan Moratti. The title of
Stephan's talk is "Steady state visual evoked potentials/ fields:
Advantages of High Signal to Noise Ratio in Basic and Clinical
Psychophysiological Research" and, as ever, everyone is welcome.
Thanks,
Sam
