The Department of Applied Neurocognitive Psychology at Oldenburg University, Germany, offers a Post-doctoral position (salary level E13 TVL, 3 years) with a focus on signal processing / statistical learning for analysis of speech coding in the human brain. The position is linked to the collaborative research center "The Active Auditory System" SFB-TR 31. The research center aims to characterize and model mechanism of auditory object formation and scene analysis by combining psychophysical, neurophysiological, and quantitative modelling. It complements the Excellence Cluster "Hearing 4 All" which was recently awarded to the University of Oldenburg. The combined effort of these centers will establish a strong link between neurophysiological models of auditory object representation and subjective perception. The post-doctoral position is situated in a project that applies statistical learning methods to human intracranial recordings (ECoG) and fMRI to derive and test quantitative statistical models of speech coding in the human brain. The experiments are performed in a highly interdisciplinary lab environment and in close collaboration with the University of California Berkeley and Stanford University. The quantitative nature of the research project will require highly motivated candidates with strong quantitative and experimental skills. Successful candidates will perform cutting edge research and should have a background in one or more of the following fields: signal processing, statistical learning, brain-machine-interfacing, non-invasive or invasive human neurophysiology of the auditory system. We are seeking a highly motivated PhD student for a 4-year position at the Dept. of Experimental Psychology under the supervision of Ruth Krebs and Nico Boehler. One central focus of our labs is the investigation of the interaction between reward processing and cognitive control (see http://users.ugent.be/~rkrebs/index_files/publications.html for related publications). Our department hosts several research groups in the realm of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, creating a dynamic research environment including regular internal talk series as well as presentations by invited speakers. We have access to state-of-the-art equipment including a research-dedicated 3-tesla MR scanner (Siemens), a 64/128-channel EEG system (Biosemi), as well as an MR-compatible EEG system and TMS. Candidates are expected to have a Master's degree in psychology, (cognitive) neuroscience, or a closely related discipline on the starting date. He or she will mostly carry out behavioral and fMRI experiments, but extensions to EEG (including MR-compatible EEG) are possible. Experience with neuroimaging methods as well as programming skills would be highly appreciated. The starting date is flexible, but preferably in spring 2014. Salary is according to standard Belgian regulations (scholarship: ± €22.000,‐ net/year). Although the governing language at Ghent University is Dutch, knowledge of Dutch is not a pre-requisite. 2-year neuroscientist position at Laurea University of Applied Sciences (FINLAND) A neuroscientist position is available in the NeuroLab at Laurea University of Applied Sciences, Finland. The position is part of a 2 year project investigating consumer’s preferences (measured by fMRI) of goods presented in the scanner. The project is funded through TEKES (Technology Agency of Finland) and during project three neuromarketing studies will be executed. In the neuromarketing studies, real marketing materials will be used in the fMRI experiments (Still pictures, videos, audios). NeuroLab is located at the Service, Innovation & Design campus in Leppävaara, 11 kilometers from downtown Helsinki in Finland. The lab has all equipments in order to plan (Making stimulus simulations by presentations) fMRI-studies and analyzing fMRI-data (Matlab and SPM). NeuroLab uses AMI-centre’s new SIEMENS 3 Tesla fMRI-scanner, located at Aalto University campus at Otaniemi. AMI-centre gives excellent research infrastructure for fMRI-research. Primary responsibilities includeplanning, executing, analyzing, and co-authoring papers from fMRI studies with healthy adults who will participate to the neuromarketing studies. Neuroscientist works in the research group lead by Principal Investigator Jyrki Suomala (Ph.D., Docent, Principal Lecturer). Candidates should have a doctor degree in neuroscience, neuropsychology natural sciences, engineering or a related field. Ph.D. students with strong experience and motivation of fMRI-studies and track record of high level scientific publications could be suitable candidate. Basic computer programming skills (preferably Matlab) and experience with fMRI in general and SPM (Statistical Parametric Mapping 8.0 or newer) especially are necessary requisites for the candidate. The high level motivation to make fMRI research and ability to work independently and in a team are qualities of suitable candidate.Depending on background and interests, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop computational neural models of human behavior(F.ex. hierarchical reinforcement learning) and buying decision in the marketing environments, as well as to contribute to the design, execution, and analysis of behavioral and fMRI experiments intended to inform and constrain new computational models. Postdoctoral Researcher – Mindfulness training and real-time neurofeedback. Center for Mindfulness, UMass Medical School, MA USA The Center for Mindfulness at UMass Medical has an opening for a postdoctoral researcher to conduct research aimed at furthering our scientific understanding of mindfulness meditation and the extent to which real time neurofeedback can track and augment mindfulness training. This is an exciting opportunity to participate in projects using real-time source-estimated EEG neurofeedback in conjunction with fMRI. We have recently identified biologically plausible brain targets of meditation (e.g. Brewer et al PNAS 2011, Garrison Neuroimage 2013), and have received R01 funding to examine whether neurofeedback from specific brain regions associated with meditation can augment mindfulness acquisition. The successful candidate will contribute to these efforts by providing analysis of current datasets and developing her/his own mentored projects. The candidate will work in an interdisciplinary team of physicians, clinicians and basic scientists. The successful candidate should be creative, able to work as part of a multi-disciplinary group with physicians, psychologists, engineers and computer scientists, and should have excellent communication skills in English and good writing skills. Experience with fMRI techniques and analysis is important, and an interest in therapeutic applications of meditation and mindfulness training is preferred.
