Dear all,
We wanted to email everyone to remind people of one of the key changes
we have made at YNiC recently, and the rationale for doing this. We used
to always provide two YNiC staff as operators during any bookable
"operator covered hours". Some labs provided at least one level 0
operator, which meant that sometimes YNiC only needed to provide one
operator but the default was always two operators unless otherwise
arranged. This resulted in YNiC staff time being inefficiently used, for
example they would learn last minute that they weren't required for a
specific scan.
We have now moved to a system where the default assumption is that you
provide a level 0 operator during any bookable "operator covered hours".
We have trained as many people as possible since this change, supporting
labs when needed to provide this cover. This has allowed us to increase
the number of bookable hours and provide YNiC staff with more certainty
in relation to when they are scanning.
*Critically, we do not want these changes to prevent people from using
YNiC.* One of the key reasons for making this change is that it frees up
resource to allow us to support those who need it. Instead of providing
support for labs that are able to support themselves, we can now use
YNiC resources in a more effective, efficient, and equitable manner.
*The key point here is that if you want to use YNiC facilities and need
support, we are here to help.* If that means providing two YNiC staff
during scanning then that is possible. Come talk to us and we will do
whatever we can to get your project up and running - we want YNiC used
more often by a more diverse set of researchers.
As always, get in touch with either me, Beth, or Andre if you have any
questions.
Best wishes,
Aidan & Beth

*Abstract: *The last decade has seen a considerable increase in scientific

fatigue. Of the many emerging concepts, one that urgently needs to be
addressed is identifying clusters/subtypes/phenotypes of poststroke

Hi everyone,
Next week's Cogs meeting (Friday 19th April, 11.30am, YNiC) is on
"Learning in the Sleeping Brain" and is led by Vanessa Keller. The session
will focus on this recent paper
<https://elifesciences.org/reviewed-preprints/89601#tab-content>, including
some potentially exciting advances alongside some potentially less
convincing claims. Just the kind of thing we love to hear about and discuss!
Cogs meetings are open to undergrads, academics, masters students,
postdocs, research staff, PhD students, YNiC staff and basically anyone
with an interest in cognitive neuroscience at the University of York.
If you'd like to present a session, if you have ideas for topics that would
be good to hear about , or if you want to find out what others are
suggesting please take a look at the discussion board, or email us. We have
another slot coming up on Friday 3rd May (although it's not yet in the
departmental calendar) - no topic or speaker has been firmly identified
yet, so if you are very keen to present please get in touch.
After that we will start looking for presenters and topics for next
semester - which seems a long way off. We look to have a mix of people at
different career stages, from different labs and with different interests,
so wherever you fit in, you'll fit in!

depressive disorder?
She'll discuss a recent paper that suggests the answer may be yes

Dear all,
As mentioned in the recent Psychology staff meeting, we have now made an
office in YNiC available for everyone to use. There are 3 desks in the
office, 2 with YNiC desktop PCs and one is a hot desk with a single
USB-C plugin. The office is the first one on the left as you come into
the open plan area in YNiC. If you would like to spend more time in YNiC
but want a bit more privacy than the open plan area allows for, then
this is the space for you!
For now the room isn't bookable. We will see how the room is used and by
whom over the coming months and can reassess whether it should be a
bookable space in the future. The main message is, come spend some time
in YNiC and talk to us about your awesome research plans!
Best wishes,
Aidan

Hi All,
The Siemens scanner has developed a serious fault this afternoon, and it is
not currently operational. An engineer has inspected the system and
diagnosed the issue, but unfortunately the repair will take some time. We
have been advised that the scanner will not be functional next week (26/2 -
1/3).
Please ensure that you contact all the participants that you have scheduled
to scan next week, to let them know that their scan sessions will have to
be cancelled and rescheduled for a later date. We apologise for the
substantial disruption, unfortunately this is an age-related fault that
could not be prevented.
We will do everything we can to get the scanner up and running as soon as
possible, and we will keep you updated as soon as we know when it will be
available again.

*The Brain Imaging Data Structure (BIDS) is becoming the standard format
for organizing and sharing neuroimaging data. It has been adopted by a
large number of research groups for internal use, as well as the OpenNeuro,
SchizConnect, Developing Human Connectome Project, and FCP-INDI databases.
This seminar will give a beginner's introduction to BIDS, and how it can be
combined with containerized computing.*
