Hello Everyone,
We at YNiC are in support of the message below. We have a diverse user
community, which we value enormously. We strive to have an open,
supportive and inclusive approach to all our activities - teaching,
research and a clinical service for the community.
I would encourage any of you to make suggestions on how we can improve by
contacting Professor Beth Jefferies as detailed in the message below.
Best wishes
Tony

To all students and staff in the Department of Psychology
Following the message from the Vice Chancellor about the importance of
an inclusive
community
<https://www.york.ac.uk/news-and-events/news/2020/inclusive-community/> within
the University, we would like to take this opportunity to restate our deep
and long-standing commitment to Equality and Diversity within the
Department of Psychology, and our support for the Black Lives Matter
movement.
We strive to provide an inclusive, friendly and supportive environment that
allows all our staff and students to thrive and fulfil their potential. The
more we can draw on everyone's talents, the more successful our department
and our discipline will be.
The Inclusiveness and Development Committee oversees our work towards
Equality and Diversity in the Department. We recognize there is much more
work to be done and this is highlighted by the striking
under-representation of Black and Minority Ethnic staff in UK universities
and in our Department. Our outreach work with schools with high numbers of
students in under-represented groups aims to attract more diverse people to
university in the future. We have also introduced a student survey to
better understand the experiences of students from different backgrounds.
We want to see much faster progress in this area, and we welcome any
comments and suggestions about how we can further address inequalities. If
you would like to make a suggestion, please contact the Chair of the
Inclusiveness and Development Committee (beth.jefferies(a)york.ac.uk).
With many thanks,

Hi everyone
As usual, I hope you are all doing well!
*Remote Desktop Update*
Firstly, a quick update on the status of the Remote Desktop. Everything is
up and running as normal now, and you should hopefully not experience the
lagging that we had previously. Big thanks to Mark and Joe for resolving
this, and we appreciate your patience while it was fixed.
Just a reminder that we have a Remote Desktop channel on Mattermost (
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/discuss/everyone/channels/remote-desktop),
which you can log onto from the browser on your computer (rather than via
the remote desktop) to check for any current issues, or to report any
Remote Desktop related problems to us.

Hello All,
We have been having a few glitches with the remote desktop, as Lauren
communicated earlier. I should also say that your input is proving useful
already in debugging the issues.
Mark and Joe are working on this. These are challenging times because Joe
is on paternity leave. Please be patient given the circumstances.
Best regards

Hi everyone
I hope you are all doing well.
You will have likely seen Tony's email last Wednesday, which marked YNiC's
15th year since opening - this is also the same date as Professor Gary
Green's birthday, who was YNiC's first Director! YNiC celebrations will
be postponed to a future date, when we hope to be reunited with you all
under happier and safer circumstances.
*Congratulations*
Here's some good news during these strange times - congratulations to our
IT wizard Joe Lyons and his wife Emma, who gave birth to their second
child, Samuel, on the 16th May. We look forward to meeting him in the
future!
*Journal Club*
This week we'd like to promote a webinar that is being hosted by the OSA
Color Technical Group this Thursday at 5pm UK time (12pm East Coast USA
time). Registration is free, and the talk is being given by Prof Michael
Webster from University of Nevada, Reno. Details and link to register are
found below:
*Title: Seeing Color Through Different Eyes - Individual Differences in
Human Color Perception*
*Hosted by:* OSA Color Technical Group
*Date and time*: 4 June 2020, 12:00 - 13:00 ET
*Registration*:
https://www.osa.org/en-us/meetings/webinar/2020/seeing_color_through_differ…
*Summary*
Even among observers with normal color vision, color sensitivity and
perception can vary widely. These differences arise at many levels, from
well-characterized variations in the spectral sensitivities of the cone
receptors to still-mysterious factors affecting how people experience and
name colors.
In this webinar hosted by the OSA Color Technical Group,
Professor Mike Webster (University of Reno, Nevada) will provide an
overview of individual differences in color vision, how they can be
studied, and why they matter for understanding or working with color. The
webinar will also explore visual processes that compensate for sensitivity
variations, contributing to constancy in color percepts both within and
between observers despite seeing the world through different eyes.
*What You Will Learn:*
- Basics of human color vision
- Individual differences in how we see color
- Implications of individual differences for color discrimination
and color appearance
*Who Should Attend:*
- Students, researchers and professionals interested in color vision
- Anyone interested in understanding how color vision
and color perception differs between individuals
*About the Presenter*: Prof. Michael Webster, University of Nevada, Reno
Michael Webster is a vision scientist who studies the cognitive and neural
processes that underlie how we see. Much of his work focuses on
characterizing how our perception adapts when the environment changes (e.g
we move to a drier climate) or we change (e.g. as we age). He has
discovered a number of novel and influential forms of adaptation, affecting
how we see colors, how we correct for blurry vision, and how our perception
of someone's face depends on the faces we have seen previously.
*Logging out of the Remote Desktop*
We would like to remind users about the importance of *logging out* to end
remote desktop sessions at the end of the day. You should treat the remote
desktop in the same way as the open plan PCs: save your work and log out as
you normally would once you finish for the day (i.e. Applications > Log
Out) - once you've logged out your session should automatically terminate,
but if not, you should also terminate the session on the x2go client.
Any remote desktop sessions that have been suspended (not opened or used)
for more than ten days will be terminated to free up space.
*Support*
If you have any questions or need assistance, no matter how minor, please
send an email to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, rather than to specific
individuals, as this will be the best way to get help quickly.
I hope you all have a good week and enjoy the last of the sun before the
much-needed rain begins this week (allegedly).
Take care,

Hello All,
There is a plaque in YNiC commemorating the opening of the centre 27th May
2005. YNiC is therefore 15 today. Under normal circumstances, we would
have had a celebration. This will be postponed but in the meantime, I
thought I would share some data:
Research Participants scanned: 4,512
Users of the YNiC facilities: 1,077
Research students (MSc + PhD): 614
Number of projects: 432
Scan Sessions: 19,662
Sequences run on MRI: 69,809
DICOM images acquired: 160,000,000
The vast majority of you receiving this will have contributed to some, many
or all of those numbers. Thank you!
Also, huge thanks to the staff at YNiC past and present, who have made
everything possible.
We look forward to a time when together we can resume research and teaching
activities and provide our valued clinical service to the community.
All good wishes

We will all join a zoom meeting (details below), and one of the YNiC staff
will host the video for everyone to watch together - we can then pause
during the talk if necessary, add comments in the zoom chat, or just
discuss it at the end. Note that there is no pressure to have your mic or
video on at any time during or after the talk (you also don't need to watch
it in advance).

Hi everyone
I hope you are all doing well.
We would like to remind users about the importance of *logging out* to end
remote desktop sessions at the end of the day. You should treat the remote
desktop in the same way as the open plan PCs, and log out as you normally
would once you finish for the day (i.e. Applications > Log Out) - once
you've logged out your session should automatically terminate, but if not,
you should also terminate the session on the x2go client.
*Support*
If you have any questions or need assistance, no matter how minor, please
send an email to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, rather than to specific
individuals, as this will be the best way to get help quickly.
*YNiC Journal Club - Thursday 4pm*
Last week we did a screen share of a YouTube video from a talk at the OSA
Fall Vision Meeting - this worked pretty well and so we will continue this
format for now (no advanced prep required!). As usual, we haven't decided
on the video yet, but what I will do is add the YouTube link to the zoom
meeting title once we have decided (in case you want to see what's on the
agenda before attending the Journal Club).
The plan is that we will all join a zoom meeting (details below), and one
of us will host the video for everyone to watch together - we can then
pause during the talk if necessary, or just discuss it at the end.

Hi everyone
I hope you enjoyed the extended Bank Holiday weekend (despite the limited
options for activities!).
YNiC staff are continuing to maintain the centre (on an alternating
schedule to maintain social distancing) to ensure that MEG helium fills,
MRI scanner DQAs, and Backups are performed regularly.
We have a couple of points we would like to make YNiC users aware of today:
*Closing Remote Desktop Sessions*
Once you have finished your remote desktop sessions for the day, whenever
possible please log out and shutdown your session (rather than just
suspending).
*Support*
If you have any questions or need assistance, no matter how minor, please
send an email to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, rather than to specific
individuals, as this will be the best way to get help quickly.
*YNiC Journal Club - Thursday 4pm*
This week we will be watching a YouTube video of a talk given by Kendrick
Kay at the OSA Fall Vision Meeting in 2017, titled: "Bottom-up and Top-down
computations in word- and face-selective cortex".
The plan is that we will all join a zoom meeting (details below), and one
of us will host the video for everyone to watch together - we can then
pause during the talk if necessary, or just discuss it at the end. If you
want to watch it in advance, or can't make it on Thursday, the link is

Hi all
I hope everyone is staying safe and well.
As you may have seen, the University is adding an extra two days to the
Easter holiday this weekend, so the University will be closed from
Wednesday 8th to Monday 13th April. Therefore, YNiC user support will also
be unavailable over that period. You will still be able to use the remote
desktop, if you wish.
More hard work from Joe, Mark and Rich last week means that we've now
increased our remote desktop capacity even further. However, to ensure
that everyone can make use of the remote desktop, please note that any
large analyses must *only *be run on the cluster, and not directly on the
remote desktop. Any users that do not use the remote desktop responsibly
will have their sessions terminated by our IT team, so please adhere to
this restriction. Please see the
information and further page links here:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/Cluster.
I hope you are able to enjoy some work-free time over the bank holiday
weekend! In the meantime, if you are experiencing any technical issues
please send us a ticket at support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, with screenshots and
details of the errors.
All the best

Hi everyone
Apologies for the delay in sending you the paper for this week. Alex Wade
will be presenting the attached paper by Tyler, Lani and Hwang (2018),
Ultrasonic modulation of neural circuit activity, Current Opinion in
Neurobiology.
The link to the google hangout is here: https://meet.google.com/mzy-titj-yrq
Last week we had a little chat at the start, but mainly had cameras and
mic's off so that it was easier to hear the presenter, so we'll go for that
method again this time.
See you (sort of) at 4pm!

Hi everyone
I hope everyone is doing OK?
As you might expect, we don't really have much YNiC news for you these days!
If you experience any issues with the remote desktop that cannot be
resolved by the troubleshooting section on the wiki (
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop), please send us a
ticket to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk and include screenshots and details of
the error. For any other assistance, please make sure you also use the
support ticket system, rather than an individual's email address, so we can
make sure messages don't get missed.
We had a great Journal Club last Thursday, presented by Theo, and we hope
to keep these going. Please let me know if there is a paper you find
interesting and would like to present. This is the link to the google
hangout, for Thursdays at 4pm: https://meet.google.com/mzy-titj-yrq . We
haven't got a paper for this week yet but I'll keep you posted.
Take care,

Hi everyone For those that are interested, we are starting a YNiC Journal
Club on Thursday's at 4pm during this period of social distancing and
isolation. This week, Theo has selected the following paper: Andrew Quinn
et al (2018) Task-Evoked Dynamic Network Analysis Through Hidden Markov
Modeling https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fnins.2018.00603/full
This event link should (hopefully) show you a link for joining a 'hangout',
so follow that at 4pm on Thursday if you'd like to join us for a chat about
the paper (or just for some social interaction!). Unfortunately we can't
provide refreshments for this virtual event, but feel free to bring your
own along. All the best, Lauren

Hi everyone
I hope everyone is managing OK with social distancing and the various
challenges that it creates.
Joe and Mark have been working hard to increase our remote desktop capacity
for users - we had a few teething issues which have been mostly resolved.
If you haven't yet connected to the remote desktop please make sure you
read the instructions here
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop, and ensure you are
first connected to the University VPN before connecting to the YNiC remote
desktop; note that we have extended access to all users now.
As usual, if you are experiencing any issues with the remote desktop that
cannot be resolved by the troubleshooting section in the above page, please
send us a ticket to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk and include screenshots and
details of the errors you are experiencing.
Please be reminded that YNiC is closed to users, and projects that have
been impacted by the cancelled scans should submit a scan reimbursement
form to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk, if they haven't already done so (you can
find this form at the bottom of this page https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/forms
).
YNiC staff are working from home but we are doing a daily check-in of the
centre, as well as essential maintenance work on the scanners twice a week.
Stay safe everyone, and wash your hands. :-)
All the best

Dear all,
We have identified an issue with the latest X2Go remote desktop client
which prevents people from connecting to their remote sessions.
To work around this issue, you will need to use a specific version of
the client rather than the latest one. We have updated the wiki page
with details for new users
(https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop)
For existing users, you can check which version of the X2Go client you have
by going to Help
-> About X2Go Client. The version number will be listed there as
4.x.y.z. If you do not have 4.1.2.0 or 4.1.2.1, please follow the
re-install instructions below.
* On Windows, find "Add or Remove Programs" in System settings, find
"X2go Client for Windows" and choose Uninstall
* On Mac, right click on the X2goClient application and "Move to Trash"
Now re-install the correct version. For Windows, this is 4.1.2.0 and
for Mac this is 4.1.2.1. We have included direct links below, but you
can also navigate to https://code.x2go.org/releases and then find the
correct version from there. If using a Mac, please ensure to get the
right version for your Mac OS version.
* Windows:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-win32/x2goclient/releases/4.1.2.0-201…
* Mac 10.13 or later:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-macosx/x2goclient/main/4.1.2.1/x2gocl…
* Mac 10.11 or 10.12:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-macosx/x2goclient/main/4.1.2.1/x2gocl…
* Mac 10.9 or 10.10:
https://code.x2go.org/releases/binary-macosx/x2goclient/main/4.1.2.1/x2gocl…
Please let us know if you have any questions.
Thanks,

Dear All,
The email below was sent earlier today by acting HoD of the Department of
Psychology, Tim Andrews. We will adopt the recommendation not to conduct
research at YNiC because of the face-to-face contact with volunteer
participants. All scans booked tomorrow and onwards will not be
performed. We have been in touch with all teams that have bookings today.
I know this is frustrating, but there is no choice in this matter given the
government advice concerning non-essential contact, as Tim rightly outlined
in his message.
Scans booked will receive reimbursement of time as per policy. If you are
affected please complete the scan reimbursement form available of the ynic
website and return it to support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk.
We will be back in touch when we have any updates about when scanning can
resume. In the meantime, remote access has been extended to all users to
allow work to be done at home.
Best wishes
Tony

Subject: Update
To: All Staff and PhD Students <all-psyc-group(a)york.ac.uk>
Hello everyone,
I am sure that you are all concerned about recent events. I don't have any
additional recommendations except to heed the advice that we are getting
from government and university. There has been a lot of hard work going on
in the university to update students and staff about how to deal with the
current issues, but also to plan for the future.
I would just like to update you on work going on in the department. We have
been working hard to make sure that key staff have remote access, so we can
continue with current assessments. There is a lot of ongoing work to plan
for online teaching and assessment next term. Additional provision has also
been provided by servers in YNiC, so staff can work remotely. I would like
to thank all the people who have been working hard on this.
I have consulted with colleagues in the department about face-to-face
testing of participants. Given that the advice is to avoid all unnecessary
social contact, we recommend stopping face-to-face testing for the
foreseeable future. We are looking into how we can help with data
collection by moving to online testing.
We are likely to be encouraged to work at home where possible in the near
future. Please take the time to make sure that you have all you need for
this. We may need to think imaginatively about how we can make best use of
our time given the circumstances.
Finally, please take care of yourself and each other. Also, take the time
to look out for vulnerable people in the community. It is going to be a
very worrying time for them. However, let's hope that things will get
better soon.
Best wishes,
Tim

Dear all,
Due to recent events, we are aware that more staff and students will be
needing to work remotely than is usually the case. To enable everyone
who uses YNiC to work in as flexible a way as possible at this time, we
have temporarily added more resource to our remote desktop setup and
removed the restrictions which normally limit its use to those at PhD
level and above.
For those (including students) who have not used the remote desktop
setup before, you will need to take the following steps:
1. Register for and set up access to the University VPN
https://www.york.ac.uk/it-services/services/vpn
(if you are a YNiC user who does not have a UoY account, please
email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk and we will make alternate arrangements)
2. Set up the X2Go remote desktop application. We have a
comprehensive guide here:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/ITPages/RemoteDesktop
Note that you will need to log in to the YNiC website in order to
read the documentation (see the link at the top right of the website).
3. When you wish to connect to the remote desktop service, you will
need to connect to the University VPN and only then connect to the
remote desktop service.
We have set up a single page for users with information about remote
working at YNiC. This page is at:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docs/RemoteWorking
We would ask that support issues are filed in the usual way, by emailing
support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk. In addition, staff will be monitoring the
"Town Square" channel on the YNiC Discuss server at:
https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/discuss
We will continue to monitor performance of the remote systems over the
next few days and will do our best to match the service capacity with
the demand from staff and students.
