Fwd: 3 PhD positions at Ghent University

We are seeking three highly motivated PhD students at the Dept. of Experimental Psychology, Ghent University (Belgium), each for a 4-year contract. One candidate will be associated with the lab of Nico Boehler (funded by the FWO), and two candidates with the lab of Ruth Krebs (funded by an ERC starting grant). A common focus of our labs is the investigation of the effect of motivation on various cognitive functions on the behavioral and the neural level (see our webpages for related publications http://expsy.ugent.be/staff/cstaff.htm) Our department hosts several research groups in the realm of cognitive psychology and cognitive neuroscience, creating a dynamic research environment including regular internal talk series as well as presentations by invited speakers. We have access to state-of-the-art equipment including a research-dedicated 3-tesla MR scanner (Siemens), a Biosemi EEG system, as well as an MR-compatible EEG system, eye-tracking devices, and a TMS lab. All three positions will involve behavioral and fMRI experiments, but extensions to EEG and combined fMRI-EEG are possible. Content-wise, the project with Nico Boehler will investigate the role of reward effects on pro-active and re-active control during conflict resolution and response inhibition. The projects with Ruth Krebs are focused on the interaction between reward and emotion processing and the immediate and long-term effects of such interactions in different tasks. Candidates are expected to have a Master's degree in psychology, cognitive neuroscience, or a closely related discipline at the starting date. Experience with neuroimaging methods as well as programming skills would be an asset. The planned starting date for all three positions is October 1st 2015, although one of them could also start earlier. Salary is according to standard Belgian regulations (scholarship: ± €22.000,‐ net/year). Although the governing language at Ghent University is Dutch, knowledge of Dutch is not a pre-requisite. Research Engineer in Neuro-Imaging Background and Mission The Lyon Neuroscience Research Centre (CRNL, http://crnl.univ-lyon1.fr) includes 11 teams (INSERM, CNRS and Lyon 1 University) interested in the neural mechanisms underlying cognitive functions in humans and animals. The study of cognitive processes associated with memory, attention, pain, perception, action, sleep and consciousness constitute their main interests. One approach to investigating these processes uses brain imaging tools to study functional and/or structural changes, both in healthy subjects and in patients with cognitive dysfunctions. Four CRNL teams (NeuroPain - CMO – DYCOG – ImpAct, http://crnl.univ- lyon1.fr/index.php/fr/Recherche/Equipes) have partnered to fund a full-time Research Engineer position in structural and functional NeuroImaging to help and guide researchers in the design of experimental protocols and analysis of brain imaging data (general linear modeling, multivariate analysis, functional connectivity, VBM, DTI...). The successful candidate will also be expected to ensure the implementation and integration of analysis programs and tools for optimal use by users, and to train and inform users about new developments in advanced analysis of functional MR data. Data is acquired on MRI scanners (1.5T and 3T), PET and MRI - PET hybrid scanners. *Postdoctoral position, San Diego, California* *Overview:* Research in the "Spatio-temporal brain imaging laboratory", uses multimodal functional imaging methods including electro- and magnetoencephalography as well as structural and functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to investigate "where and when" characteristics of distributed neural circuits underlying cognitive and affective functions such as decision making, inhibitory control, language, and emotion perception. Of particular interest are alcohol-related impairments of self-regulatory functions in the context of neurotransmitter genetic markers. We also collaborate on projects focusing on brain-based disorders such as autism. The primary responsibilities of the post-doctoral scholar will include designing studies, optimizing analysis protocols in the context of a multimodal anatomically-constrained MEG/EEG method, integrating fMRI and genetic results, analyzing and interpreting data, and writing up manuscripts and presenting results to scientific community.
