Hi all, Further to my previous emails, we have had re-occurrences of the triggering issues in TMS. Unfortunately we are going to have to suspend he use of the lab for safety reasons until we can get to the bottom of the issue. We realise that TMS is currently very busy and will work as a priority to get everything up and running. However, obviously safety has to be our primary priority. We will keep you updated. To all YNiC users With effect from the 1st December 2015 YniC operator cover will be removed from a number of afternoon MRI sessions. Afternoon sessions have been selected so that groups with their own operator can extend their sessions into the early evening making use of time that was previously not available. It would be appreciated if all projects/groups that have their own level 1 operator make every effort to book their scans predominantly during these periods leaving the remaining sessions for those projects that require a YNiC operator. Your co-operation in this matter is appreciated. Ross

We are seeking a motivated and intellectually able candidate for a PhD project investigating the neurobiology of how stress affects memory. This multidisciplinary project, supervised by Dr Nils Muhlert, Dr Deborah Talmi, Dr Hamied Haroon and Professor Geoff Parker, will combine multi-modal neuroimaging methods (including diffusion MRI, MR spectroscopy and functional MRI) with behavioural testing to examine how inter-individual variation in brain structure and function predicts the effects that stress has on memory for personally relevant information. The candidate will also have the opportunity to spend time with our industrial collaborator, Bioxydyn, developing neuroimaging techniques for the medical imaging services industry. The studentship will commence in September 2016 and will cover your tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant. Additional funding for research costs and academic conference travel is available. These studentships are available to UK and other EU nationals (due to funding criteria imposed by the Research Council, EU nationals must have resided in the UK for three years prior to commencing the studentship) and provides funding for tuition fees and stipend, subject to eligibility. We are looking for a doctoral candidate who is interested and motivated to develop and implement psychological experiments, in working with students, and in writing publications and presenting research results at conferences. You should bring with you good knowledge in Biological and Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience and Methods/Statistics. Position No.1 The project focuses on acoustic and olfactory stimulus assignment deficits in patients with schizophrenia and healthy volunteers. In a functional imaging study (fMRI) in healthy volunteers we investigate whether the source monitoring ability of perceived odor stimuli or words can change after using transcranial direct current stimulation. A second study will focus on schizophrenia patients with olfactory or auditory verbal hallucinations. Here, however, no brain stimulation is performed. Position No.2 The project addresses the question whether regulation of negative emotions can be improved with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Both neuropsychological questionnaires and repeated fMRI measurements will be employed to address this research question. For the first part of the project, healthy volunteers will undergo repeated tDCS sessions, and behavioral as well as neural correlates of emotion regulation will be compared before the first and after the last tDCS session. This procedure will be repeated in the second part of the project, but this time participants will be criminal offenders on probation, who persuambly have deficits in emotion regulation. Both positions are intended to lead to a PhD, and are initially limited to two years (with the option of extension). We want to attract motivated candidates with a university degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Neuroscience, and a solid knowledge of English. A great interest in (Cognitive) Neurosciences should be present, as well as the ability to work independently and responsibly, but also well in a team. Very good knowledge of univariate and multivariate statistical methods are expected and a solid application experience in statistical software packages such as SPSS or R is required. Programming skills in Matlab and the handling of Presentation or Eprime, or the willingness to familiarize themselves with these, respectively, are necessary. Experiences with experimental testing (behavioral experiments, psychophysiological measurements, functional imaging, transcranial direct current stimulation) are desired. POSITION: The primary duties will be to play a key role in oversight and execution of NIH/NIMH R01 MH106574, Acute neurocognitive-affective predictors of chronic post-trauma outcomes. This is a longitudinal study collecting multi-level assessments, including multi-modal imaging, in acute trauma survivors (recruited from the Emergency Department and Trauma/Surgery units at the Medical College of Wisconsin/Froedtert Hospital). The goal is to improve acute predictors of risk for chronic PTSD and other poor post-trauma outcomes (e.g., anxiety, depression, substance use) and to clarify, to the extent possible, the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms linked with these risk factors. The fellow will be expected to assist with project management, analysis of imaging and other data, and dissemination of findings. In addition to this line of work, the laboratory also engages in other imaging, psychophysiological, and behavioral work seeking to characterize aberrant emotion regulation and cognition-emotion interactions linked with internalizing and related problems. Opportunities to pursue such work are possible, although the primary responsibilities will revolve around the R01 work. ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will hold a Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology or a related field with demonstrated experience in neuroimaging. Candidates with expertise in translational, clinical, affective, or cognitive neuroscience are preferred. Expertise with multi-modal imaging including functional, resting state, DTI, and structural is preferred, as is statistical acumen in analyzing neuroimaging data. Candidates with expertise in a subset of imaging modalities may be competitive – a key criterion is willingness and ability to tackle and learn new techniques. The successful candidate will join the MRI Biomarkers subproject within the EU Horizon 2020 collaborative NISCI project – a multi-center clinical proof of concept trial aiming at the repair of the injured spinal cord through antibody induced regeneration after acute spinal cord injury. The Biomarker subproject is an international collaboration between the Prof. Weiskopf (MPI-CBS) and Dr. Freund (University of Zuerich), bringing together the unique expertise in MRI methods and clinical neuroscience. The post holder will work on the development and deployment of state-of-the-art quantitative MRI methods for characterization of the brain and spinal cord microstructure. She/he contributes to deploying the MRI techniques across the different clinical trial sites and ensuring their high performance, including international site visits.
