We are seeking a motivated and intellectually able candidate for a PhD project investigating the neurobiology of how stress affects memory. This multidisciplinary project, supervised by Dr Nils Muhlert, Dr Deborah Talmi, Dr Hamied Haroon and Professor Geoff Parker, will combine multi-modal neuroimaging methods (including diffusion MRI, MR spectroscopy and functional MRI) with behavioural testing to examine how inter-individual variation in brain structure and function predicts the effects that stress has on memory for personally relevant information. The candidate will also have the opportunity to spend time with our industrial collaborator, Bioxydyn, developing neuroimaging techniques for the medical imaging services industry. The studentship will commence in September 2016 and will cover your tuition fees as well as a maintenance grant. Additional funding for research costs and academic conference travel is available. These studentships are available to UK and other EU nationals (due to funding criteria imposed by the Research Council, EU nationals must have resided in the UK for three years prior to commencing the studentship) and provides funding for tuition fees and stipend, subject to eligibility. We are looking for a doctoral candidate who is interested and motivated to develop and implement psychological experiments, in working with students, and in writing publications and presenting research results at conferences. You should bring with you good knowledge in Biological and Experimental Psychology, Cognitive Neuroscience and Methods/Statistics. Position No.1 The project focuses on acoustic and olfactory stimulus assignment deficits in patients with schizophrenia and healthy volunteers. In a functional imaging study (fMRI) in healthy volunteers we investigate whether the source monitoring ability of perceived odor stimuli or words can change after using transcranial direct current stimulation. A second study will focus on schizophrenia patients with olfactory or auditory verbal hallucinations. Here, however, no brain stimulation is performed. Position No.2 The project addresses the question whether regulation of negative emotions can be improved with transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS). Both neuropsychological questionnaires and repeated fMRI measurements will be employed to address this research question. For the first part of the project, healthy volunteers will undergo repeated tDCS sessions, and behavioral as well as neural correlates of emotion regulation will be compared before the first and after the last tDCS session. This procedure will be repeated in the second part of the project, but this time participants will be criminal offenders on probation, who persuambly have deficits in emotion regulation. Both positions are intended to lead to a PhD, and are initially limited to two years (with the option of extension). We want to attract motivated candidates with a university degree in Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Neuroscience, and a solid knowledge of English. A great interest in (Cognitive) Neurosciences should be present, as well as the ability to work independently and responsibly, but also well in a team. Very good knowledge of univariate and multivariate statistical methods are expected and a solid application experience in statistical software packages such as SPSS or R is required. Programming skills in Matlab and the handling of Presentation or Eprime, or the willingness to familiarize themselves with these, respectively, are necessary. Experiences with experimental testing (behavioral experiments, psychophysiological measurements, functional imaging, transcranial direct current stimulation) are desired. POSITION: The primary duties will be to play a key role in oversight and execution of NIH/NIMH R01 MH106574, Acute neurocognitive-affective predictors of chronic post-trauma outcomes. This is a longitudinal study collecting multi-level assessments, including multi-modal imaging, in acute trauma survivors (recruited from the Emergency Department and Trauma/Surgery units at the Medical College of Wisconsin/Froedtert Hospital). The goal is to improve acute predictors of risk for chronic PTSD and other poor post-trauma outcomes (e.g., anxiety, depression, substance use) and to clarify, to the extent possible, the neurobiological and psychological mechanisms linked with these risk factors. The fellow will be expected to assist with project management, analysis of imaging and other data, and dissemination of findings. In addition to this line of work, the laboratory also engages in other imaging, psychophysiological, and behavioral work seeking to characterize aberrant emotion regulation and cognition-emotion interactions linked with internalizing and related problems. Opportunities to pursue such work are possible, although the primary responsibilities will revolve around the R01 work. ELIGIBILITY: Candidates will hold a Ph.D. in neuroscience, psychology or a related field with demonstrated experience in neuroimaging. Candidates with expertise in translational, clinical, affective, or cognitive neuroscience are preferred. Expertise with multi-modal imaging including functional, resting state, DTI, and structural is preferred, as is statistical acumen in analyzing neuroimaging data. Based on some recent advances extending the combined volume and surface registration, efficient approaches can be provided for dealing with this issue. However, these methods need to be validated and several open theoretical questions are related to this problem and will be investigated during this postdoctoral work. Es handelt sich um eine Postdoktorandenstelle im Rahmen des von dem Mercator Research Center Ruhr (MERCUR) geförderten Projekts „Vergleichende Untersuchung der Wirkweise der transkraniellen Gleichstromstimulation (tDCS) des Kleinhirns bei genetisch definierten Ataxien des Menschen und im Mausmodell” (Pr-2015-0010). Das Projekt beinhaltet die systematische Evaluation der für die tDCS des Kleinhirns optimalen Stimulationsparameter beim Menschen einschließlich einer ersten Anwendung bei Patienten mit degenerativen Kleinhirnerkrankungen (Ataxien). Ihre Aufgaben: Im Mittelpunkt steht die Evaluation von physiologischen und funktionellen Effekten verschiedener zerebellärer tDCS Parameter. Zur Beurteilung physiologischer Effekte kommt die transkranielle Magnetstimulation (TMS) zur Anwendung. Neben Reihenuntersuchungen bei gesunden Probanden werden erste Experimente bei Patienten mit Kleinhirnerkrankungen durchgeführt. Zu Ihren Aufgaben gehört die Durchführung der Experimente bei Patienten und Kontrollen sowie die entsprechende Datenanalyse. Die Arbeit beinhaltet Besuche im Labor von Herrn Professor Nitsche in Dortmund. Hello All, The is quite a lot of pressure on the MRI scanner at the moment. This is unusual at this time of year. One of the issues that some investigators are facing is the slots that appear to remain after others have booked are too short for them to use. For example, bookings with and hour or less between them do not allow for some investigators to complete their experiment in that time. Could I encourage all investigators to book slots that immediately precede or follow other bookings (whether those bookings are made by the same or different lab)? _Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Magnetoencephalographic imaging of dissociative anaesthetic action_ The Brain Dynamics Unit within the Brain and Psychological Research Centre at Swinburne University of Technology, in collaboration with the Universities of Michigan, Pennsylvania and Washington in St Louis, and supported financially by the James S McDonnell Foundation, is looking for a motivated and capable Postdoctoral Research Fellow to work on the functional neuroimaging of anaesthetic action. The planned project, to be performed in collaboration with physician anaesthesiologists, will involve the administration of the dissociative anaesthetic agents xenon (a noble gas) and nitrous oxide ('laughing gas') to healthy participants while simultaneous MEG and EEG is recorded. The induced changes in the functional architecture of the recorded electromagnetic activity will then be characterised using a range of existing and to be developed information theoretic, graph theoretic and non-linear methods. Attempts to account for any induced changes in terms of mean field/mass action models of brain electrical activity will also be investigated. The dissociative anaesthetic agents are of particular interest because they are reported to increase activity in the brain in addition to targeting glutamatergic neurotransmitter systems implicated in the pathogenesis of a number of psychiatric and neurological disorders. The position is intended for someone with substantial experience in recording MEG and the attendant source level analysis techniques (minimum norm, beamforming) in addition to possessing the requisite experience in existing and emerging methods used to estimate functional and effective brain connectivities from MEG and EEG data. Interested applicants should have a strong background in any of the following disciplines: theoretical physics, mathematics, biomedical or electrical engineering or quantitative biology. A first class honours degree or equivalent is required with proficiency in more than one of the following: C, Fortran, Python or Matlab in addition to substantial working knowledge of one or more of the following: FieldTrip, MNE, NutMEG, EEGlab, Brainstorm or SPM. Researchers in the unit, led by Prof David Liley, have developed a physiologically motivated theory of the dynamical genesis of the electroencephalogram (EEG). The model accounts for the rhythms of the human EEG and predicts their alteration by a range of pharmaceutical agents, in particular that of anaesthetic and sedative agents. Numerical solutions of the model's coupled set of non-linear partial differential equations have revealed spatio-temporal structures similar to those observed in experiment. It is hoped that this model can contribute to our understanding of how anaesthetic agents modulate brain activity. The Brain Dynamics group is part of the Brain and Psychological Sciences Research Centre (BPsyC), a vibrant, multi-disciplinary team of researchers whose expertise spans several different fields that include physics, psychology, psychophysiology, biophysics and the neurosciences. The BPsyC has among the most comprehensive suite of functional neuroimaging facilities available in Australia. Applicants should have completed a PhD or have submitted a PhD for qualification in psychology, linguistics, cognitive neuroscience, speech pathology or an equivalent field, and have proven technical ability with a demonstrated publication track record in diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). Appointment may be made at Level A or B, depending on the qualifications and experience of the successful applicant. Work conducted within the lab focuses on investigating the neural and cognitive mechanisms responsible for language processing in healthy individuals, how these mechanisms are affected by brain tumours and stroke, and how language recovery can be facilitated by various treatments. It is anticipated that the appointee will work across a range of projects involving neuroimaging, brain stimulation, genetic and psycholinguistic methods. There will also be opportunity for the appointee to develop new projects and obtain competitive funding based on their own research interests, in alignment with the goals and interests of the lab. The position will entail conducting research at the Herston Imaging Research Facility (HIRF), a purpose built state-of-the-art imaging centre. The HIRF is a joint initiative between the Queensland University of Technology, Metro North Hospital and Health Service, the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, the University of Queensland, and industry partner Siemens.
