The information sheet now includes some text about the video-watching study
Beth is running with help from MEG users. If you're not using MEG, or not
contributing to that, you can just remove that section from your
information sheet.
There's also a new study-specific consent form which allows participants to
agree to be contacted about future studies (including the online tasks for
Beth's video-watching study).
So the most current versions are:
Application form - version 10,
Guidance document - version 9.2.
Participant information sheet - version 11,
Study specific consent form - version 10.

this week's COGS sesion, YNiC fob access and our drop-in afternoon.
*YNiC User Inductions*
If you are aware of any new students/staff that will require access to
YNiC and/or
an IT account, they must attend a YNiC user induction. Our next induction
will be on *Tuesday the 3rd of December, at 10:00am*. Please ask them to
contact support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to sign up.
*Level 0 operator training*The next L0 training session will be held
on *Wednesday
the 4th of December, 13:00-15:00.* Please note that users requesting Level
0 training should be a PhD, RA/Postdoc, or staff, and should already have a
project proposal submitted to YNiC. Please email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk if
you have any questions or wish to book on to this session. Please note that
sessions are limited to 4 trainees, which will be allocated on a first-come
first-served basis.
*COGS: Wednesday, 11am at YNiC*
This week's COGS session will be led by *Dr Clara Humpston* discussing *"**Can
neuroimaging provide evidence for self-disturbance in schizophrenia?"*. The
session will be based on the following paper, if you would like to have a

*YNiC Fob Access*
Over the next couple of weeks we will be deactivating YNiC fobs associated
with individuals who no longer use the centre. We will do our very best to
ensure that fobs currently in use are not affected, however there is the
chance your fob may get deactivated if it has not been named on the system
correctly, or has been passed between individuals. If your fob no longer
works, we can reactivate it straight away, please just ask at reception or
a member of staff.
*YNiC Drop-In - Wednesday afternoons*
On Wednesday afternoons, there will be a YNiC research tech (or two)
working out in open plan. If you are struggling with something, or would
prefer to ask for help in person, this would be the perfect time to come
and work over in YNiC, have a chat and get some help :)
(This is in addition to our usual support ticketing system, and of course
you can come and knock on the office door at any time!)

Linking cortical magnification in primary visual cortex to visual
perception and neural encoding
Human visual cortex preserves the structure of the retinal image in
cortical maps. fMRI has made it possible to measure these retinotopic maps
from visually evoked activity in the visual cortex, including primary
visual cortex (V1). Cortical magnification (i.e., mm2 of V1 surface
area/deg2 visual space) can be measured by combining fMRI retinotopic maps
with MRI measurements of cortical surface area. Cortical magnification is
greatest at the center of the V1 visual field representation and declines
with eccentricity. Cortical magnification also markedly varies with polar
angle; it is greater at the horizontal than vertical, and lower than upper
vertical meridian of V1 visual field representation. Further, V1 cortical
magnification varies up to 3-fold when comparing among individual
observers. I will present two projects that harness this location- and
observer-dependent variability in cortical magnification to better
understand the link between the organisation of V1 and: (1) visual
perception; and (2) neural encoding. First, I will present work showing
that, when measured as a function of polar angle, V1 cortical magnification
parallels behavioural measurements of contrast sensitivity at the group and
individual level, demonstrating a tight link between brain and behaviour.
Second, I will present recent work showing that a 2D model accounts for
location-dependent variation in V1 neural properties –cortical
magnification and preferred spatial frequency. I will then show that V1
cortical magnification and preferred spatial frequency covary –and scale–
to different extents when measured as a function of eccentricity, polar
angle, and individual observer, demonstrating a link between V1 neural
resources and neural encoding.

Good morning
Following on from yesterdays email regarding access to the ground floor
kitchen, I expressed our concerns at having to use the upstairs kitchen
and YSPL have agreed that we can continue using the downstairs kitchen.
If you do have a fob though, please can you let me know as over the
years these have just been passed on when people have left. YSPL just
need names so that they can rename the fobs currently in use.

Good afternoon
As you may already be aware, Park Central is closing at the end of
October. YSPL are also taking away our access to the ground floor
kitchen and corridor from Monday 04 November. We will instead have
access to the 1st floor kitchen which does not require fob access.
Please could you therefore return your black fob so that we can get a
refund on these.
