Hi everyone
Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed a nice break over the holidays.
IT updates were completed at YNiC over the closure period; if you
experience any technical issues on return to the centre please drop us a
ticket to it-support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk.
We're kicking off the New Year with some training this week:
*YNiC User Inductions*
If you are aware of any new students/staff that will require access to YNiC
and/or an IT account, they must attend a YNiC user induction. Our next
induction will be *Wednesday 8th January at 10am*. Please ask them to
contact support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to sign up.
*Level 0 operator training:*
There are two more places available on our next scheduled Level 0 training
session for the Siemens scanner tomorrow, *Tuesday 7th January at 1pm*.
The following L0 training session (for either Siemens or GE) will be held
on *Wednesday 5th February at 10am*. Please note that users requesting
Level 0 training should be a PhD, RA/Postdoc, or staff, and should already
have a project proposal submitted to YNiC. Please email
support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk if you have any questions or wish to book on to either
of these sessions, and include which scanner you wish to be trained on. *Please
note that sessions are limited to 4 trainees, which will be allocated on a
first-come first-served basis. Training on the 5th Feb must be booked at
least a week before the session date, in order to reserve the scanner
booking.*
*First Aid Training Requirement for Operators*
*ALL* operators must attend an 'Emergency First Aid at Work' one-day
training course. We will enforce this requirement from March 2020, to give
current Level 0 users time to arrange the training course. Courses should
be organised by the project PI with a relevant training provider (e.g. St
Johns Ambulance, Red Cross); these providers can also run group training
sessions (8 or more people) on-site, so labs may wish to coordinate their
operators to all attend training on the same day, at a location of your
choice.
Hope you have a good week!
Kind regards
Lauren

Hi everyone
As you know, we are closed to users from today, and we will reopen on
Friday 3rd January. The remote desktop will be under maintenance until
Wednesday, and so there will be intermittent access to the system during
this period; we will send out an announcement once it is fully available
again.
Our next scheduled Level 0 training session will take place on *Tuesday 7th
January at 1pm*. Please note that users requesting Level 0 training should
be a PhD, RA/Postdoc, or staff, and should already have a project proposal
submitted to YNiC. Please email support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk if you have any
questions or wish to book on to this session, and include which scanner you
wish to be trained on. *Please note that sessions are limited to 4
trainees, which will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis.
Training must be booked at least a week before the session date, in order
to reserve the scanner booking.*
*First Aid Training Requirement for Operators*

Hope you all have a lovely Christmas break. See you in the New Year!

Hi everyone
We have a few reminders for you this week:
*YNiC Christmas Closure*
YNiC will be closed to users for service maintenance *from the week
commencing 16th December*, and will re-open in the New Year, on the 3rd of
January. During this period you should consider all YNiC services
unavailable. However, please note that we do not anticipate the remote
desktop to be unavailable for the entire period, and we will keep users
updated once these services resume.
*YNiC User Inductions*
If you are aware of any new students/staff that will require access to YNiC
and/or an IT account, they must attend a YNiC user induction. Our final
induction date before the Christmas break will be Wednesday 11th December
at 2pm. Please ask them to contact support(a)ynic.york.ac.uk to sign up.
*First Aid Training Requirement for Operators*
It is recommended that all Level 0 operators attend an 'Emergency First Aid
at Work' one-day training course. This is currently a requirement for Level
1 operators, and will also be required for Level 0 operators soon - we will
enforce this requirement from March 2020, to give current Level 0 users
time to arrange the training course. Courses should be organised by the
project PI with a relevant training provider (e.g. St Johns Ambulance, Red
Cross); these providers can also run group training sessions (8 or more
people) on-site, so labs may wish to coordinate their operators to all
attend training on the same day, at a location of your choice.
Hope you have a great week!

Hello All,
A little clarification on the closure details. We are closing the WC 1th
December to perform some upgrades. We do not anticipate them taking the
whole week and will update users when remote services will be available
again. Apologies for any confusion.
Best wishes

Hi YNiCers,
Benedetta Franceschiello, a visitor from the Laboratory for
Investigative Neurophysiology - Lausanne, has kindly offered to give us
a presentation on some of her interesting work which includes resolving
motion signals in MRI (particularly of the eye) and computational
modeling of visual illusions.
Please join us for a casual, interactive session at 4pm on Thursday the
28th in YNiC, followed by refreshments and maybe even a visit to the pub.
Bene's profile is here:

Good afternoon everyone,
*IMPORTANT: Cluster Output Paths*
As we indicated last week, from today it will not be possible to write to
/groups from the cluster, only /scratch/groups. This step has been taken to
prevent the /groups partition filling up with data which does not belong in
there. If /groups fills up, all users are affected.
To illustrate the point, during last week (when writing to /groups remained
possible) one cluster job generated ~300Gb of data in /groups which
belonged in /scratch/groups. The partition was therefore completely filled
up. The consequence was that another user was unable to run their stimulus
code, which depends on there being space in /groups to log output, and
their scanning was delayed significantly.
More generally, it is important to recognise that storage resources are
limited, and that when the full capacity of partitions is reached many more
people than those who wrote the data may be affected. It would be
appreciated if users who anticipate writing large amounts of data, could
first estimate how much data will be written and then ask us how best to
accommodate the data. In general, we would also like to remind users of
the importance of storing the correct data in the correct areas; this will
avoid us having to take urgent remedial actions in cases where other users
have been affected.
Hope you have a great week!
Kind regards

Hello All,
On Friday 29th November we are unable to sign off conditional
contraindications for MRI scanning. If you have participants booked or
intend to scan, please check about contraindications in advance of the
scanning session so they can be signed off ahead of Friday.
Best wishes
