Visitors to YNiC

Hello all, Just to let people know there there are a couple of visits to YNiC this week that might have an impact on you. Tomorrow (Tuesday) between 1:30 and about 2:30, and Wednesday morning, between 10 and 11 there will be groups in open plan. Both groups are pretty small and won't be using the computers so hopefully it won't be too disruptive. There will however be presentations, so you may rather have a late lunch tomorrow and a prolonged coffee on Wednesday. Thanks, and apologies for any inconvenience, Sam

Important issue about scanning

Dear Users At this time of year it can be hard to recruit participants. It is therefore very tempting to recruit close friends and relatives. One of the ethical issues that arises from taking this route for recruitment is that it might be difficult for a friend or relative to turn down your request. Unfortunately, if they accept then it then places you and us in a rather difficult position if an anomaly is spotted on the scan. This is extremely difficult to deal with if the investigator is in the control room when the anomaly is detected. We already have a policy that prevents staff from scanning relatives. We now will extend this to the scanning of all close relatives. I hope that you can understand the reasons behind this decision. The radiographers have been asked to, politely, refuse to scan relatives of investigators. Temporary Block on Booking

Dear All, I have temporarily suspended the ability to book scan slots until the end of July. I hope to allow normal booking procedures to be reset by the end of the day (Friday 9th July). Unfortunately, I have had to take this action because some projects that have strict deadlines for completion have struggled obtain sufficient scan hours under the current system of booking. I will be consulting with the project teams to resolve this today. Rest assured that all the research time between now and the end of July will not be booked as a result of this consultation process. I will update this list, when normal service resumes. Best wishes Tony

Dear Users Today (4 pm in YNiC) there will be a talk by Lee Harrison from YNiC. The title of Lee's talk is "Bayesian Inference in Neuroimaging". Abstract: "Analyzing data involves quantifying the uncertainties inherent in their production, e.g. measurement noise. A way to achieve this is to formulate models in terms of probabilities, in other words, Bayesian models. A Bayesian approach provides a language to formally represent such uncertainty and the tools necessary to manipulate these notions in a coherent manner. The aim of this talk is to give an overview of some of the ideas and rhetoric used in constructing Bayesian models, estimating them and applying them to neuroimaging problems. The talk is based on an introduction to Bayesian inference given at the Statistical Parametric Mapping (SPM) short course. The emphasis will be on applications and not the equations. For example, using Dynamic Causal Models (DCM) to ask questions about interactions between cortical regions and spatial models to implement a computational model of how an observer represents uncertainty in a sequence of events."
