FYI ----------------------------------- A software engineer position is available in Biomedical Research Imaging Center (BRIC) at UNC Chapel Hill (http://www.med.unc.edu/bric/), for maintaining and packaging the software algorithms. The successful applicant will be trained to work broadly in medical image analysis field, and to help integrate various software packages developed in the research labs. This position needs to work with a multidisciplinary team on medical image analysis. The successful applicant must have a master degree in computer science or related engineering fields. He/She must be strong in programming, and familiar with C/C++, Matlab, and ITK/VTK. Experience with Linux is highly desired. FYI --------------------------- The Department of Radiology at IRCCS Fondazione Santa Lucia, in Rome, Italy, has one open position for Early Stage Researcher (ESR) and one open position for Experienced Researcher (ER) in the EU Initial Training Network (ITN) Software for the Use of Multi-Modality Images in External Radiotherapy (SUMMER). SUMMER unifies experts from radiotherapy, radiology, human computer interaction, image registration, segmentation and medical visualization from five European countries with the goal to train a multi-disciplinary team of ten young experts for the development of future radiotherapy applications. Summer schools, workshops and research stays at the other participating institutions will ensure a high level of knowledge transfer and collaborative research. Fondazione Santa Lucia is a Scientific Institute for Research, Hospitalization and Health Care (IRCCS) in Rome, Italy, which carries out intensive research work in the fields of neuro-motor rehabilitation and, more generally, of neuroscience. The Department of Radiology studies structural and functional brain maturation in humans throughout life, in health and diseases with the aim of overcoming the segmented approach which is typical of conventional specialization training and scientific programs in order to transfer scientific research to the clinical activity. The Department of Radiology at FSL develops and implements MRI brain scan protocols and processing pipelines. Scans are being acquired for this purpose on the 1.5T and 3T scanners. Processing pipelines exist for volume quantification, Diffusion Tensor Imaging, brain iron-imaging, resting-state fMRI, BOLD fMRI, phase imaging. Fondazione Santa Lucia is responsible for the fMRI part of the project with strong focus on the development of automatic algorithms to contour target volume using fMRI imaging. by the systematic assessment, exploration and visualization of images that will be used as basis for highly reliable visualizations and delineations of the radiation target volumes. We are looking for two highly motivated young scientists preferably from European Countries interested in medical visualization and in the development of fMRI techniques development, implementation and analysis. Starting Dates for the position ESR is 1. January 2012 or later, position ER 2 starts 1. June 2013 or later. Duration ESR position is 36 month, and for ER position 18 month. ESR Applicants should have a MSc in physics, biology, biomedical engineering, psychology, or equivalent, and should fulfil the requirements to register to a PhD. They will be trained in pulse sequence programming and optimization for fMRI acquisition. ER Applicants should have a PhD in physics, biomedical engineering or medical image computing (or equivalent research experience), plus knowledge of MRI physics and experience in high-level programming; a background in pulse sequence programming is desirable. Applicants should have § Good programming skills in C++ and GPU programming § Basic knowledge in medical visualization and human computer interaction § Good knowledge of English in speaking and writing (English is working language of the ITN); § Tenacity in problem solving and willingness to learn The applicants must not have a history of employment in Italy for the past three years. FYI ---------------------------------- Dear colleagues, I wanted to draw your attention on the upcoming 2012 Brainhack, 1st edition, to be held from September 1-4 at the Max Plank Institute for Human Cognitive and Brain Sciences, Leipzig, Germany. Brainhack is not a conference or a workshop. It should be closer to one of those exciting conversations you may have had at HBM during cocktail or poster sessions. Except that we will have over three days to build up those conversations into full-fledge collaborations. One should come to brainhack ready to engage into collaborative projects, and with some material (slides, ideas, data, tools) ready to start a project or a discussion panel. Brainhack will build on the successful techniques used in other unconferences <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unconference> to keep the meeting focussed and productive. FYI ------------------------------------- Dear All, A Ph.D. student position funded by the Canadian Institute of Health Research (CIHR) is available at the Biomedical Engineering Department at Ecole Polytechnique Montreal in Canada, with a nominal duration of 3 years. This research project is about gaining a dynamic understanding of the pathways by which the brain is connected, based on data acquired in patients suffering from epilepsy. Prior to surgery, these patients go through an intense series of diagnostic tests to better identify the epileptic focus. This includes recording the electrical activity directly inside the brain as well as diverse methods of noninvasive imaging. This project requires a good formation in mathematics, good aptitude for computer programming (to be done in the SPM environment) and a keen interest in biophysical modelling and analysing a lot of data; French language skills can help but are not mandatory. The project will be supervised by myself and Profs F. Lesage at Polytechnique and DK Nguyen, a medical doctor specialised in epilepsy. Documentation / Wiki changes

Hi, We've just made some changes to the YNiC wikis. Most users access the documentation via either https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/doc or https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/docwiki This is about to change to: https://www.ynic.york.ac.uk/wiki/doc The existing URLs will redirect to the new one for the foreseeable future, so no bookmarks or links should be broken. One other change is that for the new wiki, login will be required both on-site and off-site. This may change in the near future to allow more public access to most of the wiki. Finally, some research groups had expressed interest in having their own areas on the wiki to work in - we have now made this possible and will be documenting it in the next couple of days. Projector maintenance - fMRI lamp changed

The lamp in the projector in MRI failed yesterday and had to be replaced. Any users who have luminance sensitive paradigms (i.e. who have calibrated their stimuli for luminance in the past) should consider repeating these measures and making any necessary changes as the lamp brightness may now be different. Neural dynamics actively shape and organize events in time implicitly (“temporal event-structuring”) leading to our conscious awareness of time proper (incl. simultaneity, temporal order, and duration of events but also magnitudes and “mental time travel”). Part of our work aim at understanding which aspects of sensory events and which properties of temporal cognition are fundamental to our awareness of time: how is time encoded in the brain? How does time awareness emerge? Our research group is funded by an ERC and a French ANR. Biocentre Kitchen

Dear all We have received a complaint about washing-up left in the kitchen by YNiC users. The kitchen is there to be enjoyed by everyone so please could you wash and dry the pots you use and put them away? There is a crockery cupboard for general use and YNiC milk (marked as so) in the fridge which you are welcome to use. However, if you are in need of a teabag or coffee I have some in my office - please don't use the stuff in the kitchen as this belongs to York Science Park staff.
