Our international and multidisciplinary group conducts basic research in neuroscience at the cutting edge to clinical applications. We investigate the function of neural systems that are involved in elementary cognitive processes such as learning, emotion, motivation, executive function, or decision making. In order to better understand neural mechanisms underlying mental disorders, we investigate how these processes contribute to the complex behavioral dysfunctions observed, for example, in addictive behavior. Recently, the German Funding Agency DFG has approved a new collaborative research centre (CRC) titled “Volition and Cognitive Control: Mechanisms, Modulators, and Dysfunctions”. Within this CRC, we invite applications for the projects “Dopaminergic Modulation of Meta- Control Parameters and the Stability-Flexibility Balance” and “Serotonergic Modulation of Meta-Control Parameters”. Effective immediately the following position is vacant: *2 PhD Students* The salary is according to the TV-L dispositions (2 positions, 65% each). Contract is limited to 2 years first, but will be expanded after a positive evaluation. The common aim of both projects is to investigate effects of neuropharmacological interventions on elementary cognitive processes such as learning and discounting as a function of time or probability. Both projects are complementary because they target similar psychological concepts using different neuromodulatory pathways. The successful candidate will be involved in running participants, implementing experimental protocols, and processing of the recorded data. FYI -------------------- The Cognitive Neuroscience Lab at Queens College (QC), City University of New York (CUNY), in conjunction with the Laboratory of Neuroimaging, Mount Sinai School of Medicine (MSSM), will have an opening for a postdoctoral fellow with expertise in neuroimaging. The position will remain open until filled, ideally by the Fall of 2012. The postdoctoral fellow will work closely with cognitive neuroscientists, psychologists, computer scientists, psychiatrists, and various neuroimaging specialists on research aimed at elucidating the cognitive mechanisms associated with the processing and quantification of information in the brain, especially as it pertains to cognitive control. The laboratories also have a separate line of research in attention and emotion processing in clinical (anxiety, autism, and neurologically impaired patients) and non-clinical populations. Dr. Jin Fan, Assistant Professor of Psychology at QC, CUNY and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Neuroscience at MSSM will serve as the primary mentor, although interactions with other QC and MSSM affiliated faculty is a certainty. The fellow will also have numerous interactions with Dr. Fan's colleagues at institutions locally (e.g., New York University, Columbia University, Albert Einstein College of Medicine), nationally, and internationally. Thus, the fellow will be part of a rich and stimulating, collaborative environment. Interested applicants must hold a doctoral degree in cognitive neuroscience, or a closely related field, and should have substantial experience in neuroimaging (methods, as well as data collection and analysis). Some background and/or advanced training in functional connectivity, graph theory-based, granger causality, and/or effective connectivity, as well as network-based (e.g., small world, etc.) analyses is preferred. It is critical that the candidate have expertise and working knowledge of fMRI analysis software (preferably SPM, though FSL, AFNI, and others are also acceptable), along with familiarity of Matlab and E-Prime programming. Experience interpreting neuroimaging data, working knowledge of functional neuroanatomy, and background in attention, cognitive control, and/or neuroeconomics is highly desirable. The RA will work closely with Dr. Marjorie Solomon in a dynamic and friendly environment on a variety of projects involving fMRI studies with healthy and autistic subjects. Main responsibilities will be maintenance of lab fMRI scripts and analysis, fMRI scanning, library research and data analysis, assistance with grant and manuscript preparation, and project management. The scope of responsibilities is broad and may also include subject recruitment, subject assessment using neuropsychological and cognitive neuroscience methods, protocol scoring for assessment sessions, and supervision of undergraduate volunteers as required. FSL course in Bristol

FYI --------------------- We are pleased to announce a 4-day FSL Course, to be held in the University of Bristol, UK (18-21 September, 2012). The intensive course covers both the theory and practice of functional and structural brain image analysis. Background concepts and the practicalities of analyses are taught in detailed lectures; these are interleaved with hands-on practical sessions where attendees learn how to carry out analysis for themselves on real data, with one computer provided for every two attendees. After completing the course, attendees should be able to analyse their own FMRI and MRI data sets. The course lasts 4 days, 18-21 September 2012, and follows the same format as the annual FSL and FreeSurfer course, but does not cover any FreeSurfer material. One of the puzzling observations in this line of investigation is the rather weak relation between these anticipatory neurophysiological signals (typically, modulations of oscillatory activity) and perception (most importantly, accuracy). The overall objective of this project is to identify additional neurophysiological processes that explain behavioral accuracy and its modulation by attention. The main working hypothesis that guides us in this search is that one should not only investigate anticipatory neural activity but also the neural activity during the accumulation of sensory evidence. The objectives of this research project will be addressed in experiments in which extracranial neural signals are recorded using Magnetoencephalography (MEG). Within the Donders Institute (DI), you will belong to the research group Neurophysiology of Active Perception (PI Eric Maris). As this is a collaborative project within the DI, you will also be affiliated to the research groups Prediction & Attention (PI Floris de Lange) and Neuronal Oscillations (PI Ole Jensen).
