University, invites applications for a
* Ph**D position in Functional Neuroimaging (50% TV-L 13).*
The position is available starting September 1^st , 2012 or later in the
research group “Functional imaging of the chemosensory system”, Clinic
of Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology in the framework of the
IZKF funded joint research project “Impulsivity and Aggression” at RWTH
Aachen University. Funding for this position can be provided for three
years.
The research of the group focuses on behavioral and neuronal correlates
of olfactory, trigeminal, and gustatory stimulation as well as the
interaction of the chemosensory systems with other sensory systems.
Using state-of-the-art stimulation devices in combination with
sophisticated behavioral methods and non-invasive means of functional
brain imaging (fMRI, EEG/ERP) we investigate how the human brain
processes chemosensory stimuli.
The project is focused on *Aggression in the context of situational
stimuli*. The influence of different chemosensory stimuli on aggressive
behavior and cognitive correlates will be investigated using behavioral
as well as functional imaging studies in healthy human subjects.
The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary team of
young researchers at a well-known research institution

design and conduct behavioral as well as functional imaging experiments,
collect data, perform statistical data analysis (SPSS, Matlab and SPM),
present the results at national and international meetings and publish
research manuscripts.
Candidates must hold a Diploma or M.Sc. degree in Psychology,
Neuroscience, Biology, Nutrition, or a related field and should either
have experience with sensory testing in a behavioral and
psychophysiological setting or designing functional imaging experiments
or analyzing behavioral and functional imaging data. Very good English
communication and writing skills are expected. The position requires a
strong interest in research questions and experimental skills combined
with a high level of motivation, team-orientation as well as the ability
to solve problems independently. Programming skills in Matlab are
considered a plus. Qualified women are explicitly invited to apply and

PhD position in the cognitive neuroscience of decision making

Applications are invited for two fully funded PhD positions (3 years) at
the Laboratory for Social and Neural Systems Research at the University
of Zurich. The successful applicants will work with Christian Ruff and
other SNS Lab members (http://www.sns.uzh.ch/people.html) on the neural
processes underlying human decision making, employing combinations of
brain stimulation and neuroimaging techniques.
The laboratory offers an exciting and friendly multidisciplinary
research environment with ample opportunities for training and
collaboration and excellent technical facilities (including a
research-dedicated 3T MR scanner and access to a 7T high-field human
facility, as well as laboratories for TMS, tDCS, psychophysics,
behavioral group experiments, peripheral & autonomic neurophysiology,
and pharmacology).

The School of Psychology and Clinical Language Sciences at the
University of Reading, UK, is seeking to appoint four outstanding
Lecturers (Assistant Professors) to further strengthen the School's
academic profile and to support its ambitious expansion plans. The
School houses the University Centre for Integrative Neuroscience and
Neurodynamics (CINN: http://www.reading.ac.uk/cinn/cinn-home.aspx).
CINN has a research dedicated 3T Siemens TIM Trio MRI scanner and
high-density EEG laboratories. These facilities are complemented by
high resolution stimulus display systems with integrated eye tracking,
psychophysiological measures, MRI compatible EEG, and TMS systems. It
is also closely linked to other University research centres including
the Institute for Cardiovascular& Metabolic Health, the Centre for
Food Security and the recently formed Centre for Applied Behavioural
Science.
The reputation of the School of Psychology and Clinical Language
Sciences is based on a world class contribution to psychology and
neuroscience in a number of areas, with the bridge between
neuroscience and clinical disorders being a common theme to much of

PhD position in cognitive neuroscience of incentive-based decision making
University of Giessen, Germany
Applications are invited for a PhD position in the Psychology department
at the University of Giessen, Germany. The project will investigate
motivational processing and decision making in the human dopaminergic
system. Available methods include fMRI, genetic analysis and
psychopharmacology. Interested candidates will be encouraged to develop
computational modelling skills. The successful candidate will be
expected to teach an undergraduate seminar on biological psychology (2
h/week, approx. 30 weeks/calendar year).
The department offers a research-dedicated MRI scanner with
MRI-compatible eyetracking, EEG, and peripheral physiology equipment. A
new 3T MRI will be installed this year. There is full access to a
genetics lab through local collaboration. We encourage research visits
at collaborating institutes abroad. The successful candidate will have
the opportunity to enroll in a local English-speaking graduate program.
We are looking for highly motivated candidates with a Master’s degree
(or equivalent) in a relevant discipline (e.g. neuroscience, psychology,

Abstract:
The architecture and timecourse of the perception of visual words and
picture recognition has been relatively well studied, but the process of
articulating words is less well understood as it presents practical
problems that make the acquisition of accurate MEG data difficult. This
brief presentation will discuss a pilot MEG study aimed at capturing and
analysing data from a picture naming protocol, its aims, pitfalls and
the promising but curious particularities of a very preliminary analysis
of the data.

The Audiology and Deafness Group invite applications for the following
3-year PhD studentship. The project is due to commence in either October
2012 or January 2013 subject to the preference of the successful
candidate. Funding attracts full UK/EU tuition fee support, associated
research expenses and an annual tax-free stipend of £13, 590.
The project falls within our research theme of auditory plasticity. This
theme is concerned with understanding the changes that occur over time
in the auditory system due to training, deafness, development or
restoration of input to a deaf auditory system. The translational goal
is to guide fitting and management options for hearing devices.
We are particularly keen to extend our work on plasticity after a period
of deprivation (earplug) or stimulation (amplification) in
normal-hearing individuals. Our recent work has shown that modifying the
sensory environment in this way can, for example, result in a change in
the threshold of the middle ear muscle reflex and alter the perception
of loudness. We aim to understand the physiological mechanisms and
perceptual consequences of this plasticity.
There is some flexibility over how this PhD study will be designed,
allowing significant scope for the successful candidate to shape the
research to suit personal interests and skills development. The project
will involve a combination of physiological and psychophysical
measurement techniques.
The Audiology and Deafness group provides an ideal environment for
research training. We host state-of-the-art facilities including seven
sound-treated booths and several advanced multichannel EEG systems. Our
PhD and early-career researchers form key members, benefitting from the
opportunity to present at our regular seminars and represent the group
at national and international conferences.
Applicants should hold, or expect to obtain, a minimum upper-second
honours degree (or equivalent) in an audiology, psychology, neuroscience
or cognate discipline. A Masters qualification in a related area or
minimum two years professional/research experience would be an advantage.
